So, I am part of a very small group of people who believe that an air rifle can be used for self defense. No, I am not talking about the Daisy Red Rider or 880 BB gun you had as a kid. They make some really good tactical air rifles these days. For example, Evanix makes some semi-auto .357 or .45 air rifles. These are about the same price as an assault rifle, but they are not technically firearms, so you can carry them anywhere and not get in trouble.
Disclaimer: Just so everybody knows, I am not advocating open-carrying a BB gun. You would most likely, if you were attacked, be more likely to be killed than if you were unarmed.
