Concealed Carry Pepper Spray Gun?

I need help finding a useful pepper spray that is in the shape of a firearm without presenting itself as one explicitly. I want something that can simulate the ergonomics so that when I am able to purchase one I’d be used to it. For context I’d be doing unarmed security, or any normal job. I also like going on walks or runs during times that are typically low light. I’ve never been in any danger, but I’m in a pretty ghetto area.

Can I use pepper spray more than once?

I used my pepper spray once to try. But if I'm not wrong I saw something like they can be used only once. After that they are not safe to use because gas pressure will change after the first use.

Is that true? Should I change it to a new one? It's been like 2-3 weeks.

There has been an influx of robberies in my neighborhood.

They have begun coming into houses when the owners are inside. I am scared because i am a 16 year old girl that is often home alone and my house is quite big. What do I do if someone comes in? I mean I already have alarms and two doors on all entrances into the house but I am worried what I should do if they do get in. I wouldn't say I'd be totally useless in a fight, i'm 5'8 and quite muscular, however realistically, I know that up against a man of even my same height, I'd be absolutely useless. How do i make it out of this, and if it comes down to it, how do I fight a man (because i know a woman would probably not be robbing houses). I cannot own a firearm or shoot first because I live in canada, so that is not an option. I know I should hide and call authorities first. No turning on lights.

How do I properly defend myself

Someone I was good friends with for the last 4 years offered to buy me some food and we went out to the shopping centre. He said he had no money and forgot so we walked back, on the walk back he was silent and weird despite being friendly all day. He then kicked my knees and stomped on my head multiple times instead of using his fists like a man, I got one single hit off, wasn't a bad shot but I'd like advice on how to defend myself properly next time (I'm quite tall but not all there in weight)

Strobe light defense.... What???

I see this a lot with flashlights.

By simply turning on the strobe feature of a flashlight, you can disorient an attacker and flee to safety while said attacker is trying reorient himself and figure out what just happened. Seriously, unless your attacker has epilepsy, I'm pretty dang sure that a strobe light in the face of an attacker is only going to tick them off.

So, why does this continue to be a theme used as a selling point with some flashlights?

Legal items to carry to a bar or club

Looking for weapons of opportunity. What i means is, what regular item can i carry that can be used for self defense that is not illegal to carry to a place specifically for drinking like a bar or club. An example would be a scarf, and they have that martial arts that uses a scarf. I was looking at stuff like that. Another example would be learning to throw chopsticks (like you would a knife). I know you all will ask so here it goes-> i am female and last time i was out too many dudes kept trying to get me outside. I literally dress like a ninja when i goto the club to freak people out to stay away from me. I LOVE when the security watches me closely because they think i will do something. To me thats like extra protection. Truth is i fear someone will do something to me, but i cannot live happy in a bubble. Just looking for more ideas like the ones i described above. If you think a different sub is more appropriate please let me know🙏🙏🙏🙏

MMA or individual martial arts for real world self defense?

I’m a complete beginner trying to figure out the best path when it comes to martial arts and self defense.

Originally I considered going straight into MMA because it seems like the most complete option since it covers both striking and grappling. However, a relative of mine who has some martial arts experience told me that MMA can sometimes teach you a little bit of everything without necessarily helping you build a deep foundation in the individual arts themselves. Because of that, I started looking more into training specific disciplines individually.

At first I narrowed things down to Muay Thai for striking, BJJ for grappling and ground defense, and eventually Krav Maga later on for more self defense oriented training. The more I researched though, the more I started hearing different opinions. Some people say Muay Thai is amazing for clinching, elbows, knees, kicks, and overall toughness, but that boxing or kickboxing tends to develop better punching and hand striking. Others say MMA already combines all of this anyway and is still the best overall route for real-world fighting.

What I’m mainly looking for is to become well rounded for self defense. I want to get good at striking with both my hands and feet, develop solid footwork and movement like boxing emphasizes, be able to defend myself on the ground if things ever go there, stay calm under pressure, and build confidence overall. I’m not looking to compete professionally or become some cage fighter, just want practical skills that actually work in real life.

I’d also like to learn things like defending against strikes, controlling distance, and improving my overall situational awareness and self defense skills, although I understand avoiding dangerous situations is always the best option.

For those of you with actual experience training:

If you were starting over as a complete beginner focused mainly on practical self defense, what route would you personally recommend and why?

Need help on staying sane outside, some guy might want to hurt me

Long story short I got robbed and was threatened with weapons. There's a hearing in a few months in my case. I'm the witness and the fucker who robbed me is the defendant.

You're kinda fucked in my country if there's evidence in court that you robbed someone with a weapon. I don't think he's going to go to jail, fine at most, but that's even worse probably lol.

My city is not big but also not that small, but I am 60% sure this guy and his friends passed by me in the city centre today.

He knows my name, most likely doesnt remember how I look, but I'm not sure, the group that I saw today was looking at me in a really fucking weird way. My adrenaline shot up and I was ready to start running.

Pretty much every time I go out into the city I keep scanning everything I see like I'm a cop. I know it's good practice to do shit like this and that prevention is the best self defense. But it's no way to live at all. This is my city, I was born here, some young cunts robbed me and threatened to kill me for no reason, and now I am afraid the guy wants to get some revenge or whatever the fuck. Especially after the court hearing but I will try to arrange it in a way that he won't see my face in court.

I dont have the time and money to invest in training. I work out and I run but I cant relax when Im outside. I feel like Im being hunted although nothing's happened to be fair.

How do escape getting choked laying down by someone bigger than you?

I was on TikTok, YouTube, and Google trying to figure out how to escape getting strangled. And I noticed that all these women demonstrating were either fighting off other women or men either the same size or close. For reference I’m 5’0 and 115lbs if a man comes up to me both when standing up but especially when I’m laying down chances are I can’t flip them or pull them off of me. So what do I do to escape them? Cause so far all I’ve got is the turtle neck thing we’re u tuck ur neck and pull up your shoulders to get air.

Confused about ALICE training

I'm an independent educator that visits schools and other educational institutions throughout the year. I've attended two public "sessions" about how to respond in an active shooter situation, but they have been fairly informal. Looking at the ALICE website, their events are titled "Instructor Certification Training" which seems to be aimed at becoming an actual instructor. Does ALICE ever hold events or training that the public can attend, or do they only service professional organizations? As I am not affiliated with any particular school, I seem to have no way to attend a class.

If this is true...what alternative, in-personal informational "trainings" would you recommend?

Can you knock someone out with 0 experience?

Ofcourse I'm not talking about knocking out an experienced boxer or a street fighter.

But if you ever get into a scenario where fighting back is the only option (like getting kidnapped or robbed randomly on the street because complying can get you into something even worse) could you knock somebody out without having any fight experience? (Considering you're stronger/weigh heavy than them)

Or are there any better ways to escape/defend yourself from a situation like that

Has anyone actually used a personal alarm keychain?

I've been looking into personal alarm keychains (the ones that emit a loud 120dB siren when you pull a pin) as a simple, non-lethal safety tool.

A few things I'm curious about:

  1. Have you or someone you know ever actually triggered one in an emergency? What happened?

  2. Do you think the sound is loud enough to deter an attacker or draw attention?

  3. How long have you been carrying one, and does it give you genuine peace of mind or is it more of a placebo?

Would love to hear honest firsthand accounts positive or negative. Trying to figure out if this is genuinely useful or just a feel-good gadget.

How to counter and neutralise someone who’s bigger?

I’m at university and I’m in a student club and there’s this dude who’s bigger in size and always tries to insult me and to be aggressive towards me. He always tries to be the alpha in the group and I know this sounds cringe but it’s literally what he’s doing. For some reason he has targeted me and whenever he tries to attack me I always stand up for myself. The problem is however that I’m afraid this will escalate into physical violence.

If this happens I need to know what I can do in order the defend myself, and then cause to him as much damage as possible to neutralise his threat. Some will suggest to run away but the issue is I will put myself in a really bad position socially if I run away because he knows a lot of people and will try to ruin my reputation.

I’m really sad that I’m in this situation to begin with and I don’t know what to do. I want to at least be prepared if it escalates.

Also I just want to say I can’t speak to anyone about this because they will think I’m overreacting, lying etc. You know how in school, teachers don’t do anything against the bullies. This is something similar and it’s even worse because we are all adults in a more “professional” supposedly environment.

Need a EDC strobe flashlight for self defense

Like the title says, Id like to have a small compact flashlight that has a powerful strobe mode thats able to be used in a single click. I see most flashlights having to cycle through a few clicks before the strobe light is accessible, in the case of an emergency I know seconds are valuable so having a strobe light that can be used in a single click is my ideal preference, as well as being small and compact enough for everyday carry. Of course ideally strong brightness too but with more emphasis on EDC type of light and using the strobe to disable an attacker and get away or to put as much distance between us so something ideally with a strong throw as well.

I know thats a lot of boxes to check off but does anyone have good recommendations?

why cant I exactly beat burglars to near death?

Dont come at me with some moral bullshit. If a burglar breaks into my house there is no „excessive self defense“. Im gonna beat them with something as long as it takes until I feel safe enough.

I heard there were thiefs/break-ins in my neighborhood but because I live one of the most cucked countries of all time (germany) all Im supposed to do is „run away and call the police“ (<- slave mindset) cant even own a fucking gun here without going through 20 hoops.

I should be able to blast those retards who decide to rob me. Its assumable that they will try to kill me. But no, all I can do is knock them down to the ground at most and run away. Not even continue beating them with a stick without a risk of going to jail. What is this pussy shit I fucking hate it here.

Boxing or MT for Self-Defense as an average sized male?

I am about 5'10-5'11 (somewhere here) and fluctuate between 185-205 naturally. I am wondering what is better between MT or Boxing as someone who has really only experience doing BJJ/Grappling. The main thing I am wondering is against a much bigger opponent hypothetically (6'2+) it seems risky to get close/in-range for boxing strikes which intuitively leads me to believe that MT would be better in terms of being able to strike and not get in close.

Albeit, there seems to be an equally good counter argument that fighting an opponent much taller to you implies they have greater reach so maybe closing distance would be better. What are y'alls thoughts on this?

What can I do to feel safer if Im going to court? A guy robbed me

Long story short, 1.5 years ago I was exiting the club in my city and I got jumped by 4 shitheads who were younger than me. One of them was the main guy and he threatened me with knives, knuckle dusters and pepper spray.

I complied, gave him the money and then went to the police. I got a letter some time ago that there is a court hearing in my case, and im summoned as a witness. In my country the defendant receives almost the same letter as me, so he knows my name. I highly doubt he is intelligent enough to dox me, judging by how the robbery had went and how many mistakes he'd made and how I'd played him in a way.

The thing is I live in a ~million people city which is not really that big, there is a small chance that he might see me on a street. If he's dumb enough to fight me or try to kill me, he'll most likely do it with some other guys, so in this event I'm just gonna run.

If he'd do it solo, Im gonna try everything to avoid any confrontation with him anyway. What is the best thing I can do to feel safer? I work out and Im quite fit, I've never been in a fight and I dont know how to fight. I have strong pepper spray from fox but it's not always enough to stop someone, also it doesnt work right away.

also, I've always struggled with anxiety and adhd which is not helpful in this case

First fight, what to do?

okay so me and a few friends were walking around our local college campus. When a kid I recognize (not in a good way) walks by, I whisper to my friend “yo is that isaiah“. To which he decides to scream ISAIAH at the top of his lungs. the kid and his goons rode over on their bikes and my friend bolted off to his house when he realized who it was. The kid started getting in my face and talking about some “little kev”, before anything could escalate, my other friend threw a pine cone into the kids eye, allowing me to run off into an event going on on our campus. I tell a few guys what happened, and they said they’d handle it if it escalated. When the main guy came over, I noticed his 2 friends going opposite ways to find my other friend who ran to his house, the main guy said “this ain’t over. I’ll see you on Monday”. To which I breathed a breath of relief. afterward, me and my friends were discussing strategies for when the guy inevitably comes up on monday. Ultimately we decided to try and de escalate it. But based off how our interaction went, I think that’s off the table. What are some ways I can take him down? he’s about 4 inches taller, and based off what I know, the only fighting he’s ever done is on the street, and he does 0 martial arts. Do I take it to the ground or do I try to keep it fist to fist?

HOW NOT TO GET JUMPED

Adding to a post I made here not too long ago, I need some advice.

For a bit of backstory: I was suspended. I don’t believe in fighting or violence, but I got into a fight with another student because he stole from my brother and punched him hard enough that his earring went through his ear. Even though I’ve always tried to avoid fighting, seeing that made me so angry that I fought him.

Now here’s what I need help with: the student and around five of his friends are trying to jump me and my brother. I’ve seen him and some of his friends watching me, trying to see if I’d go into a bathroom alone. My brother is friends with some people connected to them, and they warned him to watch his back because they’re planning to jump us. Some of my own friends have also heard them talking about it.

I understand there are consequences to my actions, but I don’t regret standing up for my brother. I am scared, though. I reported it to the school, which some people might call a “bitch move,” but when it’s five people threatening you, I honestly don’t care what they think anymore.

I get out of school on May 22, and I’m trying to avoid things getting worse. How do I avoid this situation, and what should I do if they actually try something?

What do I do if my attacker is a woman?

Almost every self-defense video I(17M) watch is like "hit 'em in the groin, dude!" or "kick him in the balls!" which, I mean, is great if my attacker is a guy, but I've been in just as many creepy situations with women as I have been with guys.

I mean, as a dude, I get that I have a strength advantage, but that's not always useful, is it? What if she has a knife or is trained? I can't exactly kick her in the groin(at least not unless I have perfect aim, from what I understand). Regardless of the scenario, I always get the correct answer: to run. But I'm not sure what to do if I'm trapped with her. My strategy with a dude has always been to kick him where it hurts and then get the fuck out of there.

There's also the social aspect of it - I'd be hesitant to defend myself against a woman cause I feel like people would get pissed at me or immediately jump to her defense. I've never been to a self-defense class(can't afford it), and I've found nothing online, so I genuinely don't know what to do there.

How to stay safe walking alone in isolated areas?

I am 26F and found this really beautiful place for evening walks. It is a large layout outside the busy noisy town with lots of trees, greenery, and barely any people. It genuinely feels peaceful and helps me clear my head as I am preparing for upcoming exam from home. Stepping out to a place like this is what I need. The issue is, the area is mostly empty and the few people around are mostly all men. There are only a handful of houses scattered around (all of them have camera's outside). Yesterday, I noticed one guy boozing there, and it made me a bit uncomfortable. I don’t want to stop going there just because of this. The layout is so big that I can skip the corners where these activities are happening. It's honestly one of the few places where I feel calm. But I also want to be realistic and stay safe.

Right now, I carry pepper spray and share my live location with my sibling when I go out. Honestly this place have become like a study reward for me.

I’d really appreciate any advice on:

1) Situational awareness / safety habits I should follow

2) Practical self-defense tips (especially for solo walking)

3) Psychological tricks or behaviors that can help avoid trouble

4) Red flags I should never ignore in such areas

Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Most fights don’t start with punches—they start with pride. Here’s th

After thirty years in martial arts and a lot of time teaching civilians, the biggest misconception I see is that self-defense begins with technique. It doesn’t. It begins with status management.

The common pattern before a fight is predictable:

  1. A perceived slight
  2. An ego response
  3. A refusal to de-escalate because backing down “feels like losing”
  4. A rapid escalation to force

In practice, most people get hurt not because they lack skill, but because they misread or mishandle the honor/status dynamic in step 2.

If you can do two things consistently, you avoid 90% of fights:

  • Signal you’re not a threat
  • Signal you won’t accept harm

That combination doesn’t look weak. It looks calm and controlled.

Where can I read customer reviews for rugby protective gear?

I visited a sports store to find rugby protective gear two days ago. I wanted something strong and safe. I also wanted customer reviews. But when I checked the gear I felt disappointed. Some had no reviews. Some looked strong but felt weak. I could not trust them. I could not decide confidently.
Then I visited another shop in the same area. Some gear looked better but review details were unclear. Some were affordable but not safe. Some seemed perfect at first but felt uncomfortable in use. I remembered I used gear before that did not protect well. That made me hesitate even more.
To check more variety and options while scrolling many online marketplaces including alibaba I found many protective items. Some had strong reviews and ratings. Some were simple and low price. Some had better safety and durability. There were many options available. This made me excited but also confused again.
it feels that I go out of mind when I have huge number of options. Now I am thinking should I trust online reviews or local stores for real protection? What would you do in my place?

What are top-rated shin guards for professional ice hockey players?

Top-rated shin guards (ice hockey)

I visited a sports shop to buy ice hockey shin guards two days ago. I wanted something strong. I wanted something protective. I wanted something comfortable for fast skating. But when I checked… I felt disappointed. Some shin guards looked bulky but felt heavy. Some felt light but did not look protective enough. Some prices felt too high for basic designs. I could not trust them. I could not decide confidently.

Then I visited another shop in the same area. Some shin guards felt better but still mixed comfort and protection. Some had strong padding but limited mobility. I remembered trying old gear before that protected well but slowed me down during skating. That made me hesitate even more.

To check more variety and options while scrolling many online marketplaces including alibaba… Some top-rated shin guards for professional ice hockey players are from brands like Bauer, CCM, and Warrior Sports. Some models focus on lightweight protection for speed. Some use multi-layer foam and hard shell construction for impact safety. Some have anatomical fit designs to wrap closely around the leg for better movement. Some premium shin guards also include moisture-wicking liners to reduce sweat buildup during long games. Some reviews say Bauer is strong for balanced protection and comfort, CCM is preferred for traditional pro-level fit, and Warrior is known for mobility-focused designs.

Now I am thinking the best shin guards depend on balance between protection and speed, not just thickness. Online gives more pro-level options. Local lets me feel real fit and weight. Both feel useful in different ways. What would you choose in my place?

Why Do Some NFL Jerseys Feel More Authentic Than Others?

A few weeks ago I saw a kid at a sports store holding an NFL jersey tightly. At first it looked like any jersey but when I noticed the stitching, fabric weight and printed logos it felt like more than just fanwear.it carried a sense of team pride and quality. That moment made me realize how details matter even in something seemingly simple like a jersey.

later while casually scrolling through many online marketplaces including alibaba I noticed NFL jerseys in several variations. Some were official replicas with authentic stitching. Others were lighter versions for casual wear. Sizes, fabric types and printing methods varied widely. There were jerseys for collectors, fans and kids. It felt like buyers are looking for quality, comfort and authenticity rather than just any branded shirt.

That raises a few questions. How much does fabric type affect comfort and durability? Do printing or stitching methods really change the feel of the jersey? How accurate are replica designs compared to official ones? And how many variations exist that most people never see because local stores usually stock only a few popular team jerseys?

It makes you curious which design features actually make NFL jerseys feel authentic, durable and wearable and which small details quietly decide whether a jersey becomes a favorite piece or just another item in the closet ?

Socially acceptable gloves, with tight wrapping and wrist support?

I am looking for a product recommendation. Context; i've practiced martial arts most of my life. I am fairly capable, but just due to getting a little older, my hands don't respond or recover as well to as punching as they used to.

I wrap my hands carefully (and wraps are necessary for being able to punch full force without damaging my hands further) but for the unpredictable outside world, you don't get the time to wrap your hands.

Hence my question, has anyone ever found gloves that fit tight like a wrap that provide good wrist support without sticking out like a sore thumb?

always buy a jacket with stretchy collars and cuff, because you might get stuck inside that jacket not able to slip it off and maneuver out of dangerous attack!!

or maybe a nice tac jacket could have a feature that allows it to rip apart of someone grabs you by it and uses it to hold you !!

Also, what would be a good place for me to start? I carry pepper gel and an alarm but there are places we go where I can't take those in, like the water park. I'm in a rural area and the only place we have around here is karate or something, there's nowhere that is specifically self defense, so videos might be best.

Beginner looking for good kickboxing gyms in Orange County, CA

Hey everyone, I’m a complete beginner looking to get into kickboxing first, then eventually Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I live in Orange County and have been checking out a few places, including OKA Kickboxing Club in Irvine. I talked to a family member who has some experience with self defense training, and he suggested being careful with more commercial style gyms and instead looking for places that focus more on solid fundamentals and real training.

My main goals are:

• Learning proper technique

• Building confidence

• Developing real self defense skills

• Getting into better shape

I’m not looking to compete, just want to train consistently and actually learn.

I also asked OKA Kickboxing Club about whether they include contact conditioning and they said they do, but I’m not sure what to look for beyond that as a beginner.

For those of you who train in OC:

• What gyms would you recommend for kickboxing?

• Has anyone trained at OKA Kickboxing Club or similar places?

• What are some green flags or red flags I should watch for when checking out a gym?

I appreciate any advice.

Best and worst places to get stabbed?

I know the title is a bit dumb because there's no "best" place to get stabbed. but I've always been a firm believer that if someone pulls a knife on you, you need to accept that you're going to get stabbed or cut and all you can control is where.

So in a situation where someone has a knife and running isnt an option. what should you do?

Care package for my niece.

Hello all.

My niece is headed to her freshman year of college in the fall and I'm putting together a nice self defense care package for her. So far I have the following:

- Stun gun

- Kubotan

- Drink covers

- Cuff key

- Small EDC knife

She's taking self defense classes this summer. What's the option of this sub? Any suggestions? Her mom thinks it's a bit much, but I worked in a level 6 penitentiary and am well aware of what kind of monsters are out there.

Thanks,

Did boxing save me without even throwing a punch?

I used to box years ago, I never had a fight but I used to spar every week, I was never that good but I used to enjoy it and I would always do plenty of footwork drills.

I'm not gonna explain the reason why I found myself in the situation I'm about to tell:

A man rushed at me, he looked like he was intoxicated my instinct was to side step and circling around him like I used to do in sparring, he kept on squaring up on me but I was able to keep him away, he eventually left

It happened in a car park, if it had happened before I had any boxing training I would have just moved back on a straight line eventually ending up with my back against a car or a wall and I would have probably got beat up.

So I reccomend everyone to do some boxing training, after that experience I might go back to do boxing again.

i’m sick of living like this, how did this happen?

i will admit but not proudly at all, i used to be a bully, i loved anything physical, hitting, getting hit, the adrenaline all of it. out of nowhere fear took over my mind, this is a very cowardly thing but im admitting everything on here and i became a better person, the place i used to bully people in was a fairly safe place, since then i moved to another country where people get cut stabbed run over for being a bully (no im not in the uk) since then fear completely took over my mind and im not just scared of that kind of violence i also became terrified of normal street fights even when i have to do something about it, i have been letting people step on me since i moved here and everytime i get away from a confrontation without doing anything i cant sleep for about three days after, just calling myself a coward over and over again in my head, im tired of living like this, what made me so scared? karma is definitely terrible but im tired of being scared like this even when im not in the wrong. is this a trauma response or?

Why is bjj inferior to striking for self defense?

everyone down votes me saying bjj is great for self defense. you can clinch and get behind someone, control them, take them down with low impact.

striking requires you to stand in front of another person with the same opportunity to hit you, so your skill level would have to be way higher to be effective.

grappling is the most effective art for mma, tons of self defense with someone slamming another person.

if you can manage distance and are so good at striking, youre gonna need a really high level gym. Who wants to bet there are way more high level bjj gyms all over the world compared to boxing.

dont downvote me to hell I know there are self defense masters on here but I really want to know why its always discouraged and "striking, self awareness and a throat punch" are the most effective.

I was going to ask this question in the "What Martial Arts Works Best in a Street Fight?" thread, but the post was locked. I've been training Muay Thai for about 9 months, focusing on self-defense, and on the recommendation of my therapist who said I should do some physical sport. But in a situation where someone drunk or high attacks me in the street, I don't think I could cause enough damage to knock them out, and they probably wouldn't stop because of the pain. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to take some BJJ classes focusing on takedowns, maybe that would help me more.

You carry pepper spray. You take classes. You stay aware of your surroundings.

But the moment something happens — a threat, a confrontation, an assault — your word alone may not be enough.

BlackBox App runs silently in the background and records everything. No tapping. No fumbling. No remembering to start it. It's already running before you even know you need it.

How can I develop bravery

I'm 23 years old and male.

I accept that I am prone to self loathing. I know that I am a coward who is utterly terrified of confrontation.

Whenever I have a confrontation with another man, I am so scared that I tremble and I despise myself for this.

I believe that I was kept away from conflict growing up and believe this is the underlying cause but it could also be genetic, at least to degree.

My question is, how do I change this? How do I develop the heart to be able to stand up for myself physically, should I need to. Above all, can any of this be done or will I be a coward for the rest of my life?

It prevents me from being happy inside of my relationships as I believe I'm unable to protect my relationship partner.

Thank you in advance.

Caugth someone breaking in I let him go

Yesterday I walked into my appartment on the ground floor. When I got in there was a burglar standing right in front of me. I was flabbergasted he looked scared. I told him: who are you? Get out! I stepped back and he walked through the front door talking gibberish or a language I didn't understand. I still wasn't 100% realising what was going on. When he walked through the hallway towards the entrance door of the building I grabbed his arm out of instinct. I'm a judo blackbelt and have 4 years of boxing experience as well. Instead of throwing this guy to the ground or punching. I just let him go as he was looking anxiously at me and back at the door a couple times. He didn't steal anything right when he got inside I entered the room. I rang the police and my family. They also said why didn't you stop him at first. I don't know what to think about the situation I want to ask some people with self defense experience on how I handled this situation was I smart to not escelate or should i have stopped him? are there things i could have done differently. What should i know if this happens another time. He did have a chisel on him the investigators said which he tried to force the door open with. When he was standing in front of me he was only carrying his phone.

Of course, I don't carry guns/knives to work daily. I even want to take the metro, so I need to pass the security check.

Food is a good option against dogs, but I want to hurt it instead of feeding it.

'Umbrellas'/'tennis rackets' may work.

Spray is a thing, but it's a consumable. I want something reusable.

I want to know if there are any other easy-to-use tools?

Has anyone gotten beaten by a group before ?

Hi this thought came to me today and I’m just wondering seeing how life is tough and gangs are still up. I never have been beaten before and mostly stayed in the “ normal “ part of the life I know a few that talked about their experiences and I myself only had few altercations where that adrenaline came but it was ended fast without much real kicking or punching. But I am still that naive or how do you call never been through a fight or beat down. And I’m just don’t know what should I do if it ever happens, going into the inner city where both normal people and small gang people and big gang people hang I keep hearing stories in news and from people in my course who live in those ghetto areas about what they seen and how normal it is they even know who killed who and who killed Someone’s that police haven’t caught etc. I just wanted to ask how do people deal with being assaulted by a group or beaten up , because I would water likely go in a depression or struggle hard and jsut do police report and nothing happens , or maybe be tired of life trigger point and try find some of them and hurt them back possibly with knife in anger if the feeling of revenge gets over me. I find it hard to imagine and the anger of wanting to get back at them. But I wanted to ask from those of you who are older and maybe lived double the time and have gathered that life experience

HELP! I accidentally sprayed mace in my bedroom.

Sorry if I’m posting this to the wrong subreddit I’m kinda panicking.

Backstory: I was cleaning my bedroom today and went to return a can of mace to my family kitchen counter when I pressed down on the spray not realizing the safety was off (maybe for a max of 3 seconds). I stayed in the room long enough to put a fan in before spending the next 20 minutes flushing out my nose with saline and half n half (it was all I had) since it was mostly all inhaled and crying while my father laughed at me over the phone because it’s such a dumb situation. Anyways as I was walking to the bathroom I got the can out and put it on the counter and now it got moved to the table (I think my mom moved it, how screwed am I?). Eventually I went back after about 3 hours and took my fan out thinking it was okay before leaving to study. Then I went back to try and sleep (my bed is in front of my window where my fan was with my camera bag, clean cloth on it) but tested my sheets before laying down and I immediately started feeling the burn again. So now after washing the contaminated area I’m sleeping in my family room and I don’t know what to do. Help!

Questions:

- How do I re-clean my room, bedsheets, clothes, backpack, desk, and school supplies?

- And how long do I have to wait until I can be in my bedroom again?

- How long can mace stay on objects?

- How screwed am I?

How do you protect a video from an aggressor?

One common piece of advice in self-defense situations is to start recording if something feels unsafe.

But I’ve always wondered about one thing: what actually stops the aggressor from just taking your phone and deleting the video?

If someone grabs your phone, breaks it, or forces you to unlock it, the evidence is basically gone.

Are there any good strategies for protecting recordings in situations like that?

For example:

  • automatically uploading video somewhere
  • streaming instead of recording locally
  • some kind of remote backup

I’ve been thinking about this problem for a while and actually ended up building a small Android app that uploads the video to the cloud while you’re recording, so even if the phone is taken or destroyed the footage is already saved.

Not trying to advertise here — I’m genuinely curious what people here think about this problem and how you would handle it in a real self-defense situation.

Should a 4'10 woman learn to fight or just get mace?

My girlfriend is 4'10 and she recently told me that she wants to take boxing classes so she can fight off bad guys. My initial reaction was to be supportive but I am kind of doubtful of this. I think it would be cool for her to learn boxing but I really dont see how it would help in a self defense situation because she is so tiny. I want to support her but I also dont want her to attempt to fight some guy instead of using mace because she takes boxing classes. Any advice is appreciated.

Mostly for self defence (I get brutally bullied and have been since third grade)

Administration has been no use, cant switch and my mom's a teacher so I cant do anything without coming out

I Practice mma but in most altercations, anything I can do will lead to permanent damage or them losing consciousness

Idk if this is the right place to ask but are there any techniques which are painful but harmless ? They won't lead to permanent damage or visible damage for that matter but still are excruciating enough to keep them off me

Is martial arts worth it for self defense without hard sparring?

Hey guys, I've become highly interested in self defense after a scare taking a date through a racist town. I realize I don't have the luxury of lacking the capability to properly defend myself as a man, and have been working on remedying that.

I've spent the last 3 months purchasing and firing thousands of rounds through multiple guns. I've started carrying a concealed firearm daily and can draw, remove the safety and be on target in less than 2 seconds. Now I've also begun carrying pepper spray and Intend on using that by default. You know, that middle step between angry words and drawing a gun, but I do still feel lacking in terms of hand to hand defense.

I'm intending on enrolling in a martial art, but I refuse to do hard sparring. My father got dementia, and I spent the last 5 years taking care of him until his actual dying breath. I watched my pops lose everything, and I simply refuse to intentionally do any activity where someone will be repeatedly punching me in the head full force.

Would martial arts still be a good option for me? It's going to be self defense, but also more. Shooting has also become sort of a hobby for me. I intend to go to the range at least once every month and maybe buy a new gun once a year or so as a treat. But its super practical. I'm hoping martial arts can become something like that for me as well. But it needs to be practical. I need more than just additional fitness and a hobby. I need some practical self defense as well.

What do I do about teen boy groups screaming at me and my wife?

I live in the UK in a small town, and whenever me and my wife go out we are yelled at constantly, barked at and called ‘emo’ etc two incidents recently of us being yelled at in a dark walkway by a large group of them in the dark, and today one following on his bicycle screaming ‘fucking emo bitch’ at my wife. For context, we are not even emos, she was dressed in a more flowy white blouse and a black office skirt like any working woman, and I was dressed in jeans and a hoodie but usually I wear a formal black coat. I’ve also been harassed on my own while wearing a normal jacket and jumper. I genuinely don’t know what to do, and I’m scared. I know these boys are probably just doing it to scream, but I’m genuinely afraid to go out as I’m quite small, and I don’t know if it’s better to just ignore them and take it which makes me feel honestly humiliated for not defending my wife I feel so guilty, but I dont want to start an argument and worsen the altercation which I don’t want to be in. Is there any way to ward them off/what to do about them, because I walk everywhere and cannot drive and I’m so tired of it.

There's no shortage or people thinking they're badasses and you can tell by their demeanor. I never waste my time with these kind of people but its something I notice. I don't know if they've won some fights and think too highly of themselves or if they just think so regardless and don't know what they don't know and its the Dunning Kruger Effect. Just curious.

What are Top Moves/Techniques Beginners Should Know?

I have been asked to "teach" a class about self-defense to a youth group (girls aged 11-17). An actual self-defense instructor was going to teach it, but they had to cancel. I guess I was asked to step in because they know I box, and a lot of the girls know and like me. (I used to be one of their advisors)

Realistically, I'll only have about 30-45 minutes (maybe less because not all the girls speak English fluently and we'll have to translate). I have gone to self-defense workshops before, but it's been a while. What are some moves I should study up on with a week to prepare? Given the limited time and attention of the girls, I want to demonstrate and teach techniques that are either the most universal, effective, essential, etc.

What moves should everyone, especially every beginner, know?

What are good home defense alternatives?

I grew up around guns, learned gun safety at a young age, and have felt safe around guns for as long as I can remember. Years before I knew my wife, she was a victim of gun violence. Thus, not at all cool with a gun in the house. I completely respect her feelings on the subject, and I don’t have a need or desire for guns, so it’s not a problem for us. However, I’ve often thought about alternatives for self defense. In a gun free home, what would you keep nearby for defense from intruders?

Is Previous fight experience enough for self defense

I have fought before in different disciplines over the years, boxing, sub wrestling, tkd etc

The older I get the more I lose interest in the gym setting, I still keep up with fitness I'm my own gym 4 days a week, I still work the heavy bag and do mitt work with a partner but I don't have an interest in fighting again for sport, recently had children my mind is just on other things

The only thing I'm interested in doing now is protecting my family, I just don't want to freeze up without sparring if anything were to happen, I can obviously still throw a punch but not competition level cardio anymore.

Anyone have any advice on what the best thing to do is? Is my previous experience enough to get me out of trouble or do you guys think it's something that needs constant sparring to keep on top of.

Thanks for any advice

How to protect myself as a young female college student

Hi all. I go to a major university in FL, I live away from my parents, and recently I have been hearing all the scary things about my area. Police reports of men peaking into college girl’s apartment windows (thank god I live a few stories up), trying to open locked apartments, following girls around Target and into their car, snapping pictures of them, etc.

I’ve come to the realization that I have nothing to protect myself and that needs to change. My girlfriend has old shitty keychain pepper spray in her purse, but that’s it. I’m 20, and my ideal goal is to get my concealed carry for a gun. I keep telling my parents that I don’t want a trip to the bar for my 21st but gun lessons, lol.

What can I do now? Should I get a taser? Knife? Pepper spray? All 3? When is the best situation to use each? Thank you in advance for your help.

What are the safest places to punch someone in self-defense?

I'm a decent bit larger than most people in my environment (I do weight training but not martial arts), so I'm not very concerned about "winning the fight" as I am with not accidentally causing excessive injury or killing someone in an altercation. So, I want to ask about places where you can hit someone to create a big enough opening, so I may disengage if I wasn't able to do so before the person has already attacked me.

My most likely situation is that I get into a fight in a bar or restaurant due to an argument with another patron, who is possibly somewhat drunk, definitely unarmed, often slightly foolish and stubborn but not trying to kill me, and about 20-30% smaller than I am. My goal is to leave the fight safely, with as little damage to my opponent as possible. If I can punch the person once, get him to stop grabbing me, or to be gasping or vomiting for a short moment, that's a good enough result for me to leave safely.

Is punching the abdomen generally the best way to do this? It can cause enough pain, sometimes vomiting if my opponent has been drinking/eating, and it's relatively unlikely to cause permanent damage...? or is it actually highly dangerous?

I think going for the head is a bit too dangerous, probably? It certainly has a high chance to look bloody should the police be involved later. On the other hand, punching the arms or legs would be somewhat ineffective (or occasionally too effective if a joint is broken) so probably not those places either? Chest is basically worse abdomen because there are breakable ribs rather than squishy internal organs, so again, probably just punch the abdomen?

I'm also curious if I should discount grappling in favor of punching, because the environment can be chaotic and if I grapple I have much less control in what happens. Even if I do something as light as just shoving the person, what if he lands on a table with hot food on it or a beer bottle that shatters, for example? I also think grappling is not as effective in creating a clear exit condition for me compared to punching. I don't know if this is indeed the case though, or if I should actually prefer grappling to punching if my goal is to avoid accidentally causing permanent injury.

Thank you very much for reading the post, and for any thoughts on the matter, or your experience with self-defense against smaller opponents.

Invisawear usability

Hi all! I’m considering buying InvisaWear, and I’m trying to determine from real people their experiences/thoughts on the jewelry.

I’ve seen mixed reviews about the Bluetooth range and the subscription fees. If you own/owned one:

  • Do you actually wear it every day, or only for "high-risk" situations (night runs, first dates, etc.)?
  • Have you ever had issues with it staying connected to your phone?
  • Do you need to always have the app open? Is this frustrating?
  • Does the peace of mind justify the cost of the device and the ADT subscription?

Thanks for your opinions! Feel free to share your opinions on safety-tech jewelry in general as well.

Learning “bad words” in a language for self protection

When I first moved here, English was my third language and I didn’t understand a lot. I later found out I was being bullied in 8th grade and had no idea because I couldn’t understand what people were saying.

Now I'm in 11th grade and am learning Spanish, and I asked a friend about a bad word just to make sure I know what it means. She seemed confused about why I’d want to learn that because I never use bad words.

Am I wrong for thinking it’s important to understand insults in a language, even if you never plan to use them???

As a Dad, how can I protect my wife and children while traveling?

I have my Permit to Carry, but don’t enjoy carrying a handgun on me. And I travel a lot, so a handgun is often not an option.

Is there something else I can have on me or wear that could help in a moment of self defense/protection? Especially while traveling.

I recently got into a scary altercation in Puerto Rico while on vacation. I was buckling my 3 kids into the back of our rental car, and fortunately kept eyes on the back of my head, and locked the car and drove off while an aggressive local tried to jump me.

My family and I got away unscathed, but it made me realize that I was a moron for not having SOMETHING on me. And made me realize how quickly something can happen.

What do people recommend? Not trying to make this a post about “weapons”, but more so, what can I do as a Dad to protect my wife and children?

The small purchase that made me feel safe walking home again

I never thought I'd be that person who carries pepper spray. I used to think it was a bit paranoid. But last summer changed everything for me. I was walking home from my friend's place around 10 PM, a route I'd taken a hundred times. This guy started following me, matching my pace, getting closer. My heart was pounding. I picked up speed, he picked up speed. I crossed the street, he crossed too. I ended up running the last three blocks home and practically threw myself through my apartment door. The next morning, I was still shaky. My roommate sat me down and said, Look, I know it feels dramatic, but just get something. Anything that makes you feel less helpless. She was right. I didn't want to live scared, but I also didn't want to feel that vulnerable again. I started researching and got overwhelmed - there are SO many options, and the prices at local stores were wild ($30-40 for a tiny canister?). A coworker mentioned she'd ordered a multipack from Alibaba for her college-aged daughters which was way cheaper for the same specs. I was skeptical about quality at first, but she showed me the ones she got and they looked identical to the name-brand stuff. I ended up ordering a 3-pack gel formula (the gel is supposed to be better than spray because it doesn't blow back at you in the wind). It cost me like $15 total. It's been almost a year now. I've never had to use it (thank God), but two of my friends have gotten their own after I told them about my experience. One keeps hers in her car, another in her gym bag. I'm not saying everyone needs pepper spray, but if you've ever had that sick feeling walking alone at night, or that moment where you think what would I actually do if…, maybe it's worth considering. It's not about living in fear. It's about living with one less thing to fear.

Im just interested in your personal preferences. Living in EU, my best when going out for a run is a bigger CR one. Do you guys run CS, Pepper, CR, CN? What size?

Just got my first taser and need advice abt self defense as a woman

Hey! So I'm a 21 year old gal who is wanting to start going out to bars and such and so I bought a discrete stun gun/taser. It's called a Pain Pen and claims to be about 25,000,000 volts. Am I gonna be able to bring this into bars or clubs with me? Is there anything I should know about how to use it optimally if it comes down to that?

If i can't actually bring it into bars with me, is pepper spray a better option? Or something else? For reference I live in California.

Can you afford to defend yourself

To make a long story short, I realized today that I can’t afford to defend myself. If a situation occurs and you use your CCW to defend yourself can it be done without having CCW insurance especially if they choose not to defend you. Do I have to have 50k or more for my freedom? Can you afford the arrest let alone deal with being incarcerated until your case can be heard. If anyone has unfortunately experienced this please share.

How do denfend yourself against someone in a car

so I'm bike commuter and mostly ride on side walks to avoid the majority of traffic but I'm terrified of someone getting road rage when I do have to ride on the road

does anyone have any tips on how I could defend myself from that or would I just be screwed?

Trainer: #1 Weapon is Psychological Warfare

If you haven't been able to avoid all contact, that is. Because if you managed just one hit at getting in their head, every effort is less successful.

First goal is doubt, a many wins over them as you can get.

Second is either paranoia or calm self-assurance, whichever they're further from. The though well-applied doubt reducing the stickiness of their original positions should make this easier, it's best to approach obliquely or non seriously in a way you haven't used yet. Pump up, deflate, pump up, counteract even more. Soothe the mental wound, then add acid, mix and match a little. Or maybe sing-song or sweetly whisper your poison to what they're sure they need or do hold dear. The notion is distrusting their reality. Technically, that's also true for self-assurance to the other type, but that you're trying to help them replace their antisocial and self-destructive ideas with nice, pleasant things instead.

Third, fear/terror or calm/peace. Early on, you can try exploiting a trope or common phobia. better you can embody one that gets them. DO NOT apply a fear at every opportunity (except if you think this is thr last push or if less exposure isn't working). That would make things predictable and limit your ability to increase the level of distress. I was told on average, not fewer than 20% of opportunities but not more than 2 in 3. Roughly. But the key is inconsistency. In most cases, once sensitized, rarity punctuated with bursts of actively applied fear increases distress. Never knowing when the shoe will drop or horror to unbearability will come. It is much easier to win against a once confident, now broke attacker. On the other hand calmness is probably best applied at first uncommonly and slowly becoming more and more often unless the subject rebels.

My course was created specifically for me by a police officer with a keep interest in adaptive self-defense. For the very good reason that strangers kept doing things to me, fairly undeterred by those around me, from a full Baptist dinner hall to a parent in front of me and a policeman on the other free side. IIRC, I wasn't to be officially taught measures of physical counter-response till I was 5. But there was exception for where to apply things I didn't need to be taught. In particular, biting. So when fullsome physically active measures came around, how make even an innocuous non-breaking bites terrifying was first on the list. While human bites are medically hazardous, they aren't generally immediately scary. And cutting bites are hazardous for the biter, too, exposing you to diseases of the bitten as well as potentially dental trauma. Bites that just bleed and bleed, that would frighten most anyone. Biting your cheek, tongue tip, inner lip to bleeding gives you lots of spit/blood mix that all can read as blood if phobic, ignorant, or if fear and paranoia have been properly applied. I was also taught that while only part of self-defense to thoughtful attackers, leaving your own blood ensures possibly of DNA evidence. Not ideal, certainly, but better than nothing.

These ideas and more I used to great effect winning against the worst impulses of a horrendous offender at about 6. Used the horror trope of the overly mature child. I said I liked my teeth, my fingernails and his blood. I threatened exsanguination before biting him and then biting lips so he thought he bleeds and bleeds.he was terified

I finally started carrying pepper spray and here's why.

Honestly, I always assumed I was careful enough on my own, that I did not need to be paranoid and assume the worst happening to the point where I would need to have pepper spray on me, that was until a recent evening walk changed my perspective. The streets were quiet as usual, I was alone coming from my routine evening strolls.

I felt that gut-level unease, I felt like I was being followed, but when I looked behind me, I saw no one. It was not until a few minutes that I caught a glance of someone in a hood trying to hide behind a parked bus, that was when I knew I was not imagining things, so I ran,.as fast as I could, It was either I gave a pretty good distance or the person didn't give me a chase, I was too scared to know which it was. I got home, locked up and then I started to find videos on how to DIY a pepper spray, however, I didn't trust myself to pull it off, so I just went on Alibaba and ordered one that I picked up during lunch the next day.

I still look over my shoulder when I walk back home but this time, I have my hand in my bag ready to defend myself should the need arise.

I went to my first class and realized I’m more out of shape

So I finally summoned up the courage to try out my first true self-defense class last night. To be honest, I thought I was going in to become an action star instantly, but I literally walked out like a red tomato. It is very easy to understand how to throw a punch, that’s like the easy part, but the actual stamina to consistently throw punches for, that’s a whole different story.

The instructor was exceptional, very grounded and taught us to be aware of our surroundings using more than just flashy techniques. During our break, some of us were talking about home security and if self training is sufficient to protect a household, and then one gentleman said that he had been looking at various self defense supplies on Alibaba and how he intends to properly arm his house with all the up-to-date security features and gadgets, he mentioned it was because of an incident he had previously (which he refused to share by the way). Do you guys think it's better to focus more on the physical training, or is the gadget and home security side of things just as important? Or am I just overthinking it because I'm too tired to even move?

Should I buy my 7 yo boy a mace?

Context: we live in a not-the-best neighborhood, very walkable though, parks and what not nearby. My 7 yo boy is very active and wants to go on a bike everywhere, wants to be more independent etc.

I'm not as concerned about people being aggressive towards him as much as I am concerned about big dogs that irresponsible owners let loose very often. Sometimes these larger dogs sneak around our house, so even if I make the guy stay at home all the time there are higher than zero chances he can get attacked by a dog.

Is a mace a good idea? The guy is not very responsible, chances that he will use it on another kid or it is taken from him and used against him or on someone else and then he gets blamed are above 0. I thought it is still better than letting him out without any chance to defend.

I am going to buy a bunch of sprays and let him use one on me to give him an idea what it is (and give me an idea if he is ready for it)

Thoughts?

Self Defense Tips for Someone who’s hamstrung by Zero-Tolerance?

Hey!

This is going to sound weird but I could use some advice.

I work at a retirement home and we have a new resident who has been making me and some of the other residents/workers uneasy. You know the person you don’t want to sit next to on the subway? He’s that guy.

My bosses are aware of the situation, but they can’t do anything because while the new resident is a creep, he hasn’t done anything against the rules yet.

Making matters worse is that the home has a zero-tolerance policy. So if you get into a fight, you can’t even defend yourself (which is stupid but I don’t make the rules).

My job pays in room and board so I really can’t afford to lose my job. However, I don’t want to get badly injured in case he does decide to attack.

So what is something I can do to protect myself and others without getting into trouble? Scream “fire”? Barricade myself in a room? Stand tall and proud?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How to teach stranger danger to an adult?

My younger cousin (21F) grew up incredibly sheltered/boundary-less to the point where she trusts literally everyone with her life. I am so scared she's going to end up on the news as missing.

Just this weekend, she told me she pulled over on the highway for a truck of guys that was driving next to her trying to ask her number. I tried to share how horrifying that is, but she seemed to think it was funny and was happy they thought she was pretty. She responds to scam texts and has conversations with them if they tell her they're trying to make friends or something.

I'm so lost at what time do other than sharing after the fact why these situations are so dangerous. Are there self-defense classes that teach adults how to be safe around strangers? (she isn't neurodivergent other than ADHD, just incredibly sheltered)

My quick no BS checklist for "beginners". Feel free to add on

1 grappling art, 1 striking art, put them together in mma sparring until you can reliably beat untrained opponents bigger and more athletic.

Lift weights and start running umtil you are above average.

If american train with firearms, if uk or the like carry a good flashlight

Learn to not be a cunt when it matters. Dont hang around bars or shady places at shady times. Keep your ego in check.

Dont doubt yourself if something feels bad, leave. Enforce boundaries.

If home is a concern go about reinforcing and getting security features.

For family be present and learn how to spot and avoid predators to teach them.

SELF DEFENSE IN STR33T QUESTION

Had a question for you guys, I am a complete noob and haven't begun to do ANY form of martial arts, I wanted to do whats best for a real street fight/self defense and I figured I would go here and ask.

I want to train at an MMA gym but the ones near me only have a pure MMA class once a week and the other days are BJJ, there is another gym that specialized in Muay Thai and BJJ and I could go 4x a week, I also considered going to a pure boxing gym aswell but from what iv'e seen online, mma/muay thai + bjj seem to be better for a real street fight vs just knowing boxing, so my question is, if I wanted to be best in a street fight for seld defense what is best, pure boxing or Muay Thai + BJJ, again I'd love to join a pure MMA gym but there are none near me that have multiple classes per week, sorry for the noob question but I'd really like some advice, i'm getting kind of frustrated with all these options, thank you guys. (PLS DONT ANSWER WITH "JUST RUN AWAY" PLEASE)
