Question about chl.

So a quick question about chl laws in texas. Went out tonight to a haunted house in san antonio (downtown area, really not a good area) and of course had my glock 19 on me. While in line for the haunted house one of the workers comes by with a handheld scanner scanning people for weapons. Before he scans me tell him I am carrying and have my valid chl permit. He tells me that people aren't allowed to carry on the premise even though not one 30.06 sign is posted anywhere on the property. Just the casual no weapon sign with the red circle with a line Down the middle. I even talk to the manager about the situation and a local police officer who is at the front gate about the situation and they both tell me I can't carry on the property. Of course I went back to my car and but my handgun away but my question is would it of been okay if I refused because there were no legal signs around?
