Now, I am not very knowledgeable at all when it comes to concealed carry, gun specifics, gun laws, etc. Please bare with me, I am trying to learn about everything the correct way and with 100% safety.Without getting too specific, I have 5 family members who are police officers, former fish and wildlife officer, former police captain, K9 and SWAT unit officers, etc. So I have many options that I can pursue for advice and whatnot, the only issue is that I feel awkward and a little stupid saying "hey, I am interested in purchasing a handgun for this reason"I don't want to come off as volatile, I don't want anyone thinking that I want a gun because it's cool, or because I want to shoot someone, and that's what I am afraid of.I am a 20 year old male, I will be 21 in 4 months. I live in Virginia and I would like to know all of the legal aspects of the situation I am in.I know you have to be 21 in VA to purchase a handgun, but I have some more specific questions.What courses do I need to take before I can legally purchase a handgun? and can I take these courses prior to turning 21?My grandfather has a few firearms that he has expressed he would like to pass down to me. I know a few of them are handguns. Does a grandfather clause come into effect here?I have fired multiple guns (under the supervision of adults), so I am not completely new but I don't have knowledge on the upkeep of firearms.
