I've never touched a gun before but want to learn basics, obtain a permit, and eventually buy. Do I start with NRA basic pistol course? If not, where do I start?

The title is pretty self explanatory... but basically I know very little about guns but want to learn. Do I start by taking an NRA approved pistol course? Is that course inappropriate for extreme beginners like me or am I exactly who that course is for? Is there something I should do before that?
