Do red colored night sights maintain your darkness adjusted vision better than other colors?

I noticed that in submarine movies the control room, or "Conn", uses red lights. I then asked on /r/navy about it and someone said that's because red protects your night vision best. So if you had to leave the control room and go outside to look around at night, your night vision would be intact more.Does this apply to night sights at all?
