My journey as a new carrier, and tips for beginners

About Me (don't care about me? scroll down to see my tips/suggestions as a beginner)Hello, friends! I thought I would tell you about my experiences as a first time concealed weapons carrier - maybe to provide some insight or answer questions for people who are interested in carrying while it's still fresh in my mind. Sorry mods if this isn't allowed. Firstly, here is a little bit about myself.I am 19 years old, and I live in small town Missouri just outside of Kansas City. In my state, the age to obtain a CCW permit is 19. More about that in a minute. There are a few reasons I decided to get a gun. Last year when I was 18, somebody I know in my family had to draw their gun on a would-be robber, who just threatened to kill them. Also last year, my car was broken into and a lot of expensive stuff was stolen (yes, lesson learned). I have decided that I will not be the victim of a bully or senseless violence, which seems to be happening more frequently lately. In January of 2017, Missouri passed new legislation that lowered the concealed carry age to 19 years old (Missouri SB 656 I believe) as well as enacts permit-less carry. Interested in this, but confused with the new law I decided to take the safe route and consult with an attorney who primarily practices 2nd amendment law - after this I decided I was going to get a permit. After the painstakingly horrendous process of finding someone comfortable selling a handgun to a 19 year old, I took my CCW class (frontier justice in Lee's Summit to those in the area) - the next day I went to the sheriff, filled out my application and 22 hours later I got a call to pick it up at the sheriffs office (clay county for those in the area wondering). After this, I bought a Stealth Gear revolution IWB-mini, a gun belt, and a "ComfortTac Belly Band holster" for my Glock 23. I've carried for a couple of weeks now, and have decided that (despite popular opinion) the belly band holster was the better/more comfortable choice for my life style.Sorry, that was long-winded.Tips for Beginners from a BeginnerGetting opinions on holsters/guns is great, but remember that just because a holster or gun works well for one person doesn't mean it will work well for you.Just because your state has permit-less carry doesn't mean you should. You should probably still get a permitExperiment with different holsters, go to an armory and experiment with different guns - pick the one you'd most likely carry on a daily basis. Carrying something small is better than leaving something big at homeJust because you have a big gun, doesn't mean you can't carry it. I carry a Glock 23 and I am 5'8", 170ish pounds and conceal it comfortablyMake sure your mindset is in the right place... don't carry to protect your ego, carry to protect your lifeIf you are confused on a law, it's great to get opinions from your friends on r/CCW, but consult an attorney. Seriously, it's not worth jail timeIMHO, carrying requires a lifestyle change. No more road rage, no more arguing with peopleThink the printing from your gun is totally noticeable in public? That's a reasonable concern, but you're most like over-exaggerating. Trust me, no body will likely notice unless the grip is sticking out or something.Don't be that guy in the movie theater who gets reported to the theater staff for wearing tacti-douche gear - the idea is to blend in with the rest of the people. Also, seriously. Don't be that guy who reports him.Watch first person defender or active self protection. These types of things will help you view things from a different perspectiveIf you are carrying with an IWB holster, it is a MUST to invest in a good gun beltThoroughly test the ammo you carry in your gun! Make SURE it will feed and shoot correctlyHave questions about CCW in Missouri or carrying at my age?Hit up my inbox and I'd be glad to help you the best I can. I am NOT a lawyer. I would love to hear your thoughts/add suggestions to this post!My setupThat's all I got. Stay safe everybody! via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2mcjnpp
