University policy on concealed weapons

I was looking through my alma mater's policy page on weapons on campus earlier today and noticed something that many people will dislike.I went to school at Kansas State University and graduated several years ago. Kansas State, like many universities, has very strict policies regarding weapons on campus. Students and faculty were forbidden from carrying weapons of any kind on campus.Since I graduated, however, our legislature had passed a few bills that are very friendly to people wishing to carry concealed pistols. We passed constitutional carry in 2015 as well as a law allowing concealed carry on campuses, with an effective date of July 1 of this year. The schools affected by this have been preparing for several years now. They had the choice of creating secure buildings or areas that would have metal detectors and armed security, or just allow students and faculty to carry in those areas without any security.Kansas State decided to not create any secure buildings, except for our nuclear reactor lab. Because it isn't open to the public, weapons are not allowed in that area. However the university has said that they will create temporary secure zones as necessary in areas like the sports stadiums and large halls, like the auditoriums.Students living in university housing, either apartments or residence halls, will be able to treat their living space like their own private property in regards to firearm storage. This means that unless you have your pistol on your person or in your bag, you must secure it in a locked container in your residence or vehicle. Simply hiding it will not be sufficient, as it must be secured so that only you have access. This all seems perfectly acceptable. The controversial part is in regards to carrying the pistol. Open carry of any sort is not allowed. It must be fully concealed at all times. The weapon may not be revealed in any way, shape, or form. To me, I would be extremely worried about any accidental printing, which may be a violation of policy. You would be asked to leave campus immediately, and students or faculty would be subject to discipline according to the university code of conduct. The policy also has restrictions on how firearms may be carried. It must be in a holster that completely covers the trigger and trigger guard, and that secures any external hammer in an un-cocked position. Handguns with an external safety must be carried with the safety in the “on” position. Semiautomatic handguns must be carried without a chambered round of ammunition. Revolvers must be carried with the hammer resting on an empty chamber. That last bit really upsets me. Following all these rules would be asinine. I'm sure it was added to deter some people from carrying, or to add strikes against any sane person that is caught carrying via printing or accidental exposure. The whole text can be found as a PDF here. If I had to guess, all the other public universities in Kansas have adopted similar rules that will be going into effect on July 1st. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2lO9X6p
