Are you capable of defending yourself outside of using your firearm?

I was reading John Correira's (Active Self Protection) analysis of 5,000 gunfights for the second time today, and noticed something interesting. In the very first bulletpoint he states that " For CCW, empty-handed skills are critical for the 80% of assaults that don't rise to the level of deadly force response. So go to your martial arts training."I think a lot of us focus solely on the gun aspect of self-defense, when we should also be looking to train our bodies to be a weapon as well. The benefit of martial arts is that even in the most non-permissive enviroments, you will always have your body which can be another weapon if trained properly.I think that everyone who carries a firearm should have a less than lethal method of defending themselves. Although I understand jumping into martial arts at 60+ years of age may not be feasible for some, I would suggest to those people carrying pepper spray/a bright strobe flashlight of some sort. It's like John said...80% of assaults don't rise to the level of deadly force response, so just carrying a gun without any other less than lethal options (martial arts,oc spray, flashlight etc) may not even help you in those scenarios. Also since that is your only means of defense you may be more likely to pull it out in a situation that it doesn't call for.I recommend Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo as a good foundation to become a competent fighter. We are much more likely to die of heart disease(#1 cause of death) or have to use our hands to defend ourselves than ever having to use a gun. Martial arts will get you into better shape, teach you unarmed defense, introduce you to great people, and make you less charged up/likely to pull your gun in a situation it doesn't call for. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2vcOeJR
