Essential Skills and knowledge for CCW/CHL?

What are the essential skills and knowledge that a person needs to effectively carry and use a concealed firearm in public?  What needs to be learned immediately, learned in relatively short order (the next week), or in follow-up sessions (the next month/quarter/or more)?Situation: A personal friend has suddenly changed their previous standpoint on CHL and needs to get from unfamiliar with firearms to competency (ie ex-BF/ex-GF/ex-romantic partner makes specific and valid threats, putting your friend in fear of for their life).  Tomorrow (or next business day), your friend will go to the sheriff/courthouse to: 1) apply for CHL (and walk out with one 15 minutes later, permanent card in the mail in a few weeks); 2) file a Domestic Violence Protection Order against the ex-romantic partner. Because you are a knowledgeable and upstanding member of the firearms and CCW community, your friend is asking for your advice on what things they need to learn.Your friend has up to four hours available today for learning, in whatever combination of living room/classroom/local range is necessary. Over the next week, your friend has an eight-hour day available for instruction.  Over the next month, your student has a two-day period available for instruction.  During months two and three, your student will have a two-day and four-day period available for training.  For topics you do not feel comfortable teaching yourself, a competent instructor is available. Your friend can/will purchase and receive a firearm from the LGS today  (there are no waiting periods, FOIDs, or other legal delays). If you had the opportunity to guide a person through the process, what does a CHL holder need to know to get from Zero, to Ready-to-Go?  Four rules of firearm safety? Marksmanship? Making an emergency trac with a Bowie  knife and a Bic pen? A truck gun and "go bag," ready to clear/retake the mall? Some sorta stuff in between? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2clBVQG
