Defending my wife.

My wife got into altercation with her father. Of course she is just as hot headed as he is. DNA is a helluva drug right? LOL anyways during their argument he runs at her and shoves her repeatedly I've been told by her. I was sleep until I heard the commotion of this. My first reaction was to run to the scene and defend her by which she created space between her and her father. But in my mind as I approached the whole thing was I have to defend her against overly aggressive father. In my opinion if he would've got his hands on her probably would've harmed her seriously.

So my question is... Would I have the right to defend my wife against her father with say a belt? I didn't want to introduce my pistol to scenario because I feel that will escalating the situation but if I used a belt to strike him and restrain him off of her would I be totally in my right to do so? Tried googling but I keep getting results for child disciplining.

Thanks in advance for any insight or advice on this question.
