Many times whenever I hear people talk about home defense, many people start saying that you need buckshot to stop an intruder.
While I agree that buckshot will indeed stop an intruder immediately, it also has the unfortunate side effect of not only killing the intruder but also ripping holes through anything on the other end, and if you live in an apartment building with multiple people, and they get hit unintentionally because of a stray shot through drywall, then you can be legally accountable for it.
So instead people, consider using birdshot instead, you don't necessarily need to outright kill your attacker to stop him, even if the individual shots are very tiny, it's still a lot of lead (or steel) going at Mach 1, it's going to at the very least cause extreme pain and knock him off his feet.
Even then, if you've ever googled an image of what birdshot injuries look like you'll know that it can still kill a man, especially if it's hit any veins, arteries, or organs.
tl;dr birdshot is perfectly viable for home defense
