What are the best punching bag exercises for developing self defense skills?

I don’t have any martial arts dojos around my area but I have a punching bag on my gym. I’ve been improving my running and sprinting skills which are great in case of an attack but I would like to train my power and speed in case of fight scenario. I’ve been told that the elbows and knees are the most powerful weapons we have for self defense how can I train them with a punching bag? I know that training on a punching bag is not ideal for self defense but wouldn’t it help a bit on the striking techniques?
