How would you adapt grappling systems e.g. BJJ, Judo, Wrestling etc for self-defense situations?

While some people's opinion is that you should never deliberately grapple because of the danger of edged weapons, buddies etc, I doubt the victim getting attacked always gets to choose the range a physical attack starts at. Plus if the attacker has a weapon and the victim can't escape, wouldn't it make more sense to quickly close in and isolate the weapon from the user then incapacitate with overwhelming violence instead of half-committed punch or kick to delay the inevitable against a determined attacker who keeps advancing?

That being said, what could people from sports grappling systems do to adapt their biomechanics? Would it make sense to abandon ground-fighting and keep only ground escapes, add more standing joint dislocations to styles like wrestling and Judo etc?
