Tactical pens - Do they really work in self-defense situation?

Few questions about "tactical" pens.

1. What kind of blunt force trauma they can cause? For example strikes to head/hand/torso. Any photos of tactical pen damage in internet?

2. Have you used tactical pen in real situation? (or similar object)

3. Can hard strikes with tactical pen pierce skin? How deeply?

4. Is there reason to buy tactical pen? Or are good old fists better in defense situation? Any good quality pens?
