SOMEWHAT IRRELEVANT BACK STORY: I was driving and came upon two cars blocking both the lanes intentionally, driving half the speed limit with no hazard lights or anything. One was an older vehicle with a passenger filming the sports car beside it with a single occupant. A car turned onto the road ahead of them and they sped up (really don't know why) and I thought okay they're going to carry on now. But the sports car got in front of that car as well and proceeded to go slow as shit.
After a red light, they began rolling as slow as possible again so I took advantage of a turn lane and went around them. They didn't like it. They followed me, tailgating and almost hitting my car, one pulled up beside me with the window down yelling at me at a red light. I just kept going on my way.
ACTUAL INCIDENT: I came to a red light and I was about 8 feet behind another car. The sports car pulled up beside me and the driver got out and tried to open the passenger door. It was locked so he started punching my passenger side window about 5 times at apparent full force, like he wanted to break it. Failing that, he walked in front of my vehicle.
At this point I really thought he was retarded and I wanted to gun it (still in drive this whole time) and run him over. But the car in front of me might get damaged and his friends behind me might pursue.
He came the the driver side and, well, my car is old and sometimes the driver side doesn't lock unless you manually flip the lock. So this happened to be one of the times it didn't lock when I had previously hit the lock button (around when he got out of his vehicle).
He opened my door and before it was even halfway I yanked it back shut and locked it. He banged on the window some more and they left.
MY QUESTION: I normally keep a blade on me for exactly this scenario. I really tried not to escalate. I even did nothing while he attempted to break into my car to assault me. So how likely would I have been to end up being the one in prison if I had a knife? Because I would've gotten out and stabbed him until he went down when he started beating my window.
I know my state law allows reasonable force in response to assaults and you can't shoot someone for punching you, but can I cut him if he's twice my size? I'm not afraid to get beat up in a fair fight but I'm not big and I know when I'll definitely lose. It's an advantage comparable to a guy my size attacking me with a bat.
