NYC can I use a hammer or knife as self defense ?

I'm not a fighter and neither is my girlfriend. Being in NYC the laws are very strict when it comes to having a self defense weapon ( you pretty much can't have any)

So right now there's some drama stirring up at my girlfriends apartment because of her roommates, particular one of them. I would consider her a verbal bully and she's disrespected my girl last night and went as far as banging on her door and even putting a hole in it and my girl didn't do anything because she was afraid. (this is over something as little as not all dishes being washed) So I want to confront that girl and her boyfriend to reassure they start having some respect but I never saw the dude and I'm not sure how big he is or if he's a physical bully kind of guy as I am a skinny peaceful person. So my question is, If I confront them respectively and they escalate the situation and if any given moment I'm attacked by this person, is it safe for me to defend myself with a hammer or a knife such as a kitchen knife ? (without using it in a lethal way) I'm not physically capable of defending myself so a weapon would very much be needed if it does escalate. I couldn't find anything specific in the NY state penal laws so just checking reddit for reassurance
