I have personally been in very similar situations, where I had to interfere with racist/homophobic attacks or harassment in public places. I was surprised by how effective the Portland murderer was in not just immobilizing his victims but killing them with a knife. Not knowing what sort of knife he used (anyone?) I imagine the victims could have defended themselves with Mace. Am I being overly optimistic there? Are there better self-defense mechanisms against a knife attack apart from (duh) a gun?
