Travel through Illinois.

I am helping my brother move states in a few weeks, this move requires traveling through a sizable portion of Illinois but should not require long stops. I read through what handgun.us had online, and from what I understand, I can wear it in the car as long as I take it out and put it in a locked box in the car whenever I get out. Is this correct? If someone with experience traveling through Illinois without a resident permit would chime in I would appreciate it. For the record I am a Missouri resident and have a CCW permit.
