Is it ever okay to leave the area after a self defense shooting?

Say you get mugged in a bad area and end up shooting. You dial 911 but don't want to wait on the cops because some other sketchy dudes nearby saw/heard what happened and now they're approaching you. If I felt unsafe I would dial 911 and start running while giving the person on the line a brief account of what happened, why I'm leaving, and where the cops should meet me.
