Long Island CCW, is it possible?

I'm from suffolk county (Long Island) .... (NOT NYC)​Is it possible to get my CCW there? I've been studying at college in a different state, but will be graduating soon. I know in new york to get a pistol permit (not CC permit, permit just to own a pistol) is quite difficult in itself. I heard it takes about a year to even get that.​What should I know going into this?
