Flying with firearms

Has anyone here ever flown with American Airlines? Their rules for firearms seem to be much stricter than TSA rules but maybe I’m not interpreting their website properly. TSA says I can put loaded magazines in the case with the pistol but AA says the magazines have to be unloaded and the ammunition in the original packaging? But how on earth am I expected to fit a box of ammo in a pistol safe along with the magazines and the pistol? And once I get to Oklahoma and load my pistol, how am I expected to get back to New Hampshire? Do they expect us to buy a new box of ammo once we are ready to return?
