How the hell does “duty to retreat” work?

I live in Maine. I was watching Active Self Protection extra and the guest gave an example as:If you’re pumping gas and someone comes up to you with a gun, you’re supposed to run, and keep running until you can’t run anymore. My question is, what if you start to run and he starts shooting at you [at your back]. I mean, you can still run, and I mean yeah I guess you probably think you’re more likely to die now, but you are in fear for your life just like you were when they weren’t shooting. So are you able to pull out your Glock 19 and return fire or do you have to keep running? What am I missing?! via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2I7yAUo
