I just had an encounter with a homeless man in my work parking lot (Didn't have to draw but was prepared to) Would like /r/ccw's input on how I could have improved my chances had it escalated. Info and TL;DR inside.

Here's a story that just happened this afternoon at my office.Wall of Text Warning (TL;DR at the end)Background: I carry a Sig P938 Equinox and a spare mag appendix during t-shirt weather. My work is in a decently bad side of town in Las Vegas. My portion of the job is printing on jewelry and cell phone cases for our websites that we sell them from. About 10 minutes off the strip, so there's plenty of homeless, pan-handlers, and prostitutes in the area, but we're in a decent business complex so unless we're driving somewhere for lunch, it's usually not in our immediate vicinity. For a couple of months, we have noticed occasional temporary bedding in place behind our dumpster behind our building. To my knowledge, they only ever stayed there after hours or weekends or something.I think it was Monday this week when one of my employees told me that a homeless guy behind the dumpsters told him to "Spray that shit somewhere else, I don't want to have to breathe that in". We have to spray some of our product before printing on them, for the ink to adhere better. We spray them outside by the dumpsters cause the smell is kinda strong.I told my boss and him and I found out then that other people that work for the company left some food back there and that he left a note saying "Thank you for not calling the cops on me while I try to get back on my feet" After talking with people, it turns out there's 2 different homeless people that stay behind the dumpster apparently. And I guess my boss's mom left some food out back for him after hearing about the note. But my boss and I (only two gun people) were only told about this on monday. The old black man is the nice one who left the note, and the one who was rude to my employee and told him not to spray back there is the rude middle aged white man with a goatee. My boss said he'll "take care of it" not knowing if that meant calling the police, or the security for the building or what.Okay, on with what happened today...Today Okay, on with what happened today...So as I'm about to pull into our parking lot coming back from lunch. There's this guy walking around the parking lot. He's a tall 40-something White Male, Medium Build, black goatee, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a black backpack in his left hand (by the handle on top of the backpack). And he's just kinda meandering around the lot.I pull in the parking lot slowly while watching him because immediately, something in me tells me to watch and keep an eye on him. I had a sense that something was wrong and I needed to be on full alert. I park in the lot, and he is now behind my car, so I'm staring at him through my mirror, he turns at me and slowly starts walking up. He pauses behind my car, and then starts to approach my driver side door (me still in it).Diagram showing layout (The parking lot was a lot more full than this diagram shows)Then... He moves his backpack into his right hand and reaches behind his back with his left, with his jacket and shirt lifted up. I can't see what he was reaching for, maybe a weapon, or maybe just an itch. At this point, I am unbuckled and have my hand rested under my shirt, on my pistol, still watching him in my mirror. As soon as I open my door, I place my left foot outside of the car and my hand still just below my shirt (conspicuously prepared to draw, kinda would say it looks like my thumb is in my pocket like this) I say to him "Can I help you?" while looking right at him. He lowers his hand from behind his back and asks "Hey man, do you have a cigarette I can buy from you?""Nope, sorry, I don't smoke." Still looking him down, darting my focus from his face, to his empty hand (left hand) and his right hand (holding the backpack), that he's now twirling the backpack left and right by the strap. He says "Oh okay, that's okay" and starts to look like he's walking away, but he's heading in the direction of my work door, and I know he doesn't work for us. At this point, I step fully out of my car, close the door, and walk by him as he's not looking my immediate direction, closest we got is about 4 ft away. I don't let my eyes off of him and his hands. He stops walking right before the little gravel barrier (where the tree is) and I walk over it and keep looking over my shoulder as I walk to the door. He stays there...... ...and just watches me walk inside. I then look outside from one of the office windows and he's walking around my car... looks like he's scoping it out. Maybe he was trying to see if anything of value was in the car, but he didn't get really close to look in the mirror, but walked behind the back to the right and left of the car 2 or 3 times.I watched him for a while, and my bosses mom (he's not in the office today) walked up wondering what I'm looking at. I just tell her "This guy just asked me for smokes, but now he's scoping out my car""I'm watching him, I don't know what he's doing" I say. Two others in our office see what we're doing and join in on watching him, at this point, he looks at us through the window and I know that he can see us, he's just standing there watching as we're all standing watching him. Then he walks away outside of my view from the window. Boss's mom says she'll keep an eye on the camera (we have security cameras around the building) and she'll tell my boss.I'm going to try and get a saved image of the man from our cameras in case anything happens in the future, and will be talking about this to my boss (he knows and is glad that I conceal carry)After talking to my employee about it, the man matches the description of the homeless guy that was behind the dumpster that told my employee to stop spraying the Adhesion Promoter (Rude white homeless guy)TL;DR Strange homeless guy that apparently sleeps behind our dumpster sometimes approaches me at my car in my work parking lot. I'm on full alert, as immediately I knew something was "off". Just asks for cigarettes but then is scoping out my car after I enter my work building. Never had to draw, but was fully prepared to.I would like to hear /r/ccw's input on what you think I could have done to improve my chances in case he ended up attacking me. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VekPWF
