There are many laws I disagree with. I support constitutional carry, and I think licensing is silly and unconstitutional. I would prefer very robust self-defense laws, like castle doctrine and stand-your-ground. Most of us would. But I see a lot of good, correct information on the laws being downvoted because people don't agree with the laws. This serves NO PURPOSE WHATSOEVER to accomplish change of these laws. The only thing this does is bury good, correct information that could keep you, or another law-abiding citizen OUT OF JAIL.People often make statements to the effect of "I'm doing X thing." or "If X happens, I plan to do Y." Someone responds "be careful, because you could be charged with Z as a result." The response with correct legal information gets downvotes and smartass comments from people who hate the law. This needs to stop, for two reasons. First, most of us plan to comply with these laws, even if they're stupid. People who are aware of the laws will act differently in use-of-force situations if they know the legal standards (i.e. not shooting at a knife-wielding threat from long-distance if their state has a duty-to-retreat)Second, if you get into a defensive use-of-force situation, you need to be able to explain yourself in a way that does not admit to breaking a law. This is just as important as the first point. Even if you just call 911 and then refuse to speak without a lawyer (not a bad idea) your 911 call is generally admissible. You do not want to admit that you didn't have sufficient reason to use lethal force, or admit to some crime in your 911 call, OR fail to give enough facts to help a jury understand the whole situation. Examples:"Someone punched me, and I had to shoot him! Send an ambulance"vs."A man kept calling me racist names, then tried to tackle me to the ground so his friends could attack me too, so I had to shoot him or they would have beaten me to death!" (real scenario, shooter vindicated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHl0S9UcdtU)or"Someone has been shot, please send help!"The first option potentially admits to several crimes. The second is likely to vindicate you, if you have the presence of mind to pull it off. The third will keep you out of hot water if you don't have the presence of mind to explain why you just had to shoot a man in self-defense.If you want to change the law, call your state representative or your congressman. If you want to say that you disagree with the law, that's fine. But don't downvote, and belittle people giving correct information. There are people in jail for doing things they thought were legally justified, and were not. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1QAWHWq
