So I went on a short (~6 mile) hike last weekend with my FNX-9 in the Alien Gear IWB that I usually wear around town. When I saw a sign at the trailhead warning about wildcats, I was glad to be armed, especially since my girl isn't the fastest runner (and doesn't carry atm). I was wearing a midsized day pack without a hip strap and it was quite comfortable. This got me thinking, though... If I'm going on a longer hike, I'll be wearing a full overnight pack with a hip strap. If I'm going deeper in the woods I might also be carrying a sidearm even bigger than my full-sized 9mm. Although 17 rounds of 9mm +P FMJ is probably fine for wildcats or wolves, I'm thinking of getting a 6" GP100 in .357 magnum, or even a .44 magnum revolver, to have more power for black bears. The hip strap on the pack pretty much rules out waistband carry at any position since it'd be both uncomfortable and hard to draw. Ankle is out for something this size, especially if you're doing a lot of walking. A shoulder rig would probably get jammed up in the pack straps, so what's left? Open carry is legal in my state so I could certainly open-carry in a chest-mount rig or a drop-leg holster, but given the political climate around here I'd prefer to conceal and avoid scaring/upsetting other hikers.Any recommendations on methods of carry, especially from people who have actually used them on longer back-country trips, will be most appreciated. Again, I'm asking solely about woods carry - I'm already happy with my existing holster for urban environments. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1VvZDfi
