When is using force in a robbery justified?

This is something I've been thinking about. If someone tries to rob you at gunpoint or knifepoint, how do you know when you should shoot? Most robbers aren't interested in killing you, so when is it better to just comply? On the other hand you have no way of knowing whether they may use force on you or not, so is it always the right thing to do to shoot a robber that has a weapon? Also from an ethical standpoint, armed robbery is very wrong, but you can never know 100% the situation they are in, they may be a decent person that just took some wrong turns in life and has no Intent to hurt you.
