An interesting morning, and my thanks to /r/CCW

I subscribed to /r/CCW a couple years ago, and since then I've posted occasionally and I've read threads here on an almost daily basis. In that time, I've learned a lot, a bit through comments directed at me, but mostly through the conversations among my fellow CCWers. Y'all have taught me about gear, safety, management of unknown contacts, the proper mentality one should have when carrying, and the list goes on. I didn't realize how much I had absorbed until this morning. We received a package a couple days ago that had our address but the wrong name. I was planning to take it to the post office today to have them return it to the sender, but I didn't get the chance to do so. At about 6:50 AM, our doorbell rang, which woke both me and my wife up. It was still dark out, the only light coming from the street light next to our driveway, and we certainly weren't expecting any company. I grabbed my G19 and a flashlight from the nightstand and cracked the blinds enough to see a running car parked on the curb just outside our house.Gun and flashlight at the low ready, I made my way to the top of the stairs and stopped to assess the situation. Through the window next to the front door, I could see a male, probably in his 30s or 40s, on our front porch. He rang the doorbell a second time, at which point I figured he wasn't planning on leaving. I made my way down the stairs, keeping the lights off so that the street light would keep him backlit, and positioned myself so that I was angled away from the front window and door, my face just barely looking through the window, gun and flashlight out of his sight.About a second or two later, he noticed my face, at which point I very loudly and firmly said, "I don't know what you want, but I think you have the wrong house." The guy immediately apologized and explained that he used to live here (it's a rental property) and that he ordered something from eBay but accidentally sent it to the wrong address. Sonofabitch, you've gotta be kidding me. I leaned back from the window, put the flashlight down, and grabbed the large envelope that was sitting close by. I put it up to the window, label out so that he could see the name and address, and asked if that was it. It was.At this point, I believed the guy was an idiot, but likely not malicious. I kept my body angled, my G19 in my right hand hidden just behind my waist, and, shifting the envelope in my left hand, opened the door just a couple inches while keeping an eye on the guy's hands. As soon as I handed off the package, I closed the door and waited for the guy to leave. Through the window, he thanked me and apologized a few more times before walking back to his car and leaving. While an unknown contact showing up before dawn put me on alert, one thing that really surprised me was how calm, cool, and collected I felt the entire time. 21-year-old me would've been shitting bricks in that situation. I'm sure age has something to do with it (I'm in my late-20s now), but having read numerous discussions about similar situations on this subreddit, I felt both confident and prepared in dealing with this morning's situation. I'm very grateful the encounter amounted to nothing, and I wanted to thank everyone here for everything you've taught me and continue to teach me. This is easily one of my favorite subreddits, and I really appreciate y'all.TL;DR: Stranger rang the doorbell before sunup. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." I really appreciate the collective wisdom of /r/CCW. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2ryxvjW
