I checked my handgun on a flight and it was put on the baggage carousel unattended.

I'm just wondering if this is the norm when traveling with a checked firearm. I was required to show ID at the baggage office to pick up my gun case on my outbound flight, but my case was just thrown onto the baggage carousel when I got home. I was pretty upset that the airline would let my handgun be unattended in a room of hundreds of people. Anyone could have just picked it up and walked away as there was no security around to check baggage claim tickets.
