Federal gun laws

Hi, I am from the other side of the pond and I am writing paper on guns carried by people, and the effects of it. And I need help with something.I am writing part about gun free zones, but can't find anything other than 'Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990' and 'Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994'. And I Feel like I don't understand it. are those laws 'active'? It doesn't seem like guns are banned 1000 feet from schools. Is there something I am missing? are there any federal laws that define gun free zones? Or is it on each state to make their own laws and define what a gun free zone is?If I am breaking rule 7.
