Hello /r/CCW, I am a pro-gun college student writing a research paper about self-defense (particularly on college campuses) and some of the ideas associated about them. I will later be posting this in a few anti-gun subs. Now let me clarify, this paper is about self-defense, methods including but not limited to; gun, knife, Taser, pepper spray, etc. This is not a paper on whether a student should be able to carry on campus. Here are a few possible topic points I wrote a few hours ago.*o is pepper spray/Taser enough? Desperate who can’t feel pain or just doesn’t care Rage inducing pepper spray • Just makes them mad * Draw backs of using a Taser o Should there be required self-defense training course State wide or even just at a collegiate level o Student housing restrictions Restrictions on who can carry on campus Student housing complexes banning all “Deadly weapons” • Even though they are off campus and private businesses. o (not sure that’s constitutional in wv?) o It was on the lease so I’m not sure theres any way to get around it without getting myself evicted. o Title 9 training Most colleges require freshman to take some sort of orientation class that basically says “Don’t do drugs, don’t drink, don’t rape anyone, and don’t go out after dark.” When I took mine there was no mention of possibly carrying something on your person so you can protect yourself. o Castle doctrine vs duty to retreat Is it better to run or to fight? o How self-defense is almost discouraged today This is something I’ve noticed today. I have even personally been told “If someone wants your wallet, just give it to them, they probably need it more.” And variations of that bullshit multiple times. We as humans have a fight or flight response to danger, why did it become the fight, flight, or let it happen response? o Is it better to carry illegally and survive or obey the laws and risk death? I know a surprising amount of people that do this because “Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.” o The taboo of carrying Ie that one person who always asks “Why do you have/need that?” then goes around telling everyone “John carries X with him so don’t piss him off teehee.” o Male vs female double standard 90 pound girl carries something “Good, she needs to defend herself.” Myself (200 pound in shape man) “Why do you need/have that?” o For LEO How would and increase in LICENSED people carrying impact your daily life?If you make any broad claims (ie… x number of people die every year because they use pepper spray instead of a gun) please have some kind of source for it if you don’t mind. Also I’m not looking for the “I don’t need a reason, it’s my right.” Argument. I personally believe that’s a fantastic argument but for the sake of writing this paper and knowing my liberal professor I don’t think it should be a main point. Thank you to anyone who responds to this. -Ross via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1SxhUlK
