Drew weapon, cleared own house. What should I have done instead?

Came home to find garage door up, roommates car gone (implying no one should be home), and door from house to garage ajar. Couldn't reach roommate, looked at garage and interior door and neither had pry marks, nothing looked out of place in garage, and no other clues to suspect break-in. So thinking he probably just left it up or thought it had closed all the way but safety-rebounded due to twig or something.Drew my weapon, peaked into house and could see TV and stuff in living room was still there, with everything looking normal. Slowly cleared the house room-by-room. Heard back from roommate who admitted he must have forgotten to close it.In hindsight, wondering if I should have just sat outside and called the cops to clear it.
