What's your opinion on state legislatures completely abolishing "citizen's arrest" statutes? Doesn't the statutes still have a relevant place in self-defense and defense of personal and real property?

Wouldn't modifying the law to prevent excessive force and clarifying the causes for an arrest make more sense than just abolishing the thing entirely? Shouldn't you have the right in self-defense, defense of property and defense of others to detain a home invader or any other violent forcible felon, if that actions seems reasonably necessary at the time? The law also has been used as the shopkeepers privilege and for private security guards.
