Dr. won't "make a judgement on whether I'm fit to carry a firearm." Is that even legal?

I applied for a CCW permit and indicated under mental illness "mild depression/ADD" because that is what is on my health insurance profile. I see a psychiatrist every 3 months or so for medication. The sheriff called me saying he needed a note from Dr saying that he sees no reason I shouldn't be granted a pistol permit. I contacted my doctor and he said it's not his area of expertise and suggested I go to a different doctor in another city/state. That is his job right? He won't say I'm unfit to carry a weapon, but he won't say I'm fit to either. What do I do?​edit: this is in AL via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/3bie5BB
