First a little background. Over 35 yrs old. 6 foot male. I have cancer, am on Social Security disability, live in Tulsa OK. Throwaway account to not be traced by friends or family. Due to coronavirus, my monthly income is now the SOLE income of myself and long time girlfriend (we live together) that used to work in the medical field. She didn't feel safe continuing to work in regards to her safety, and mine with this pandemic (long story, you can imagine I'm sure) that is upon us. I recently filled out paperwork late last year that proves I'm unable to work. I have neuropathy that I'm on medication for, doctor's appointments, CAT scans, lab work etc. that backs up my claim. Our neighborhood has become increasingly unsafe judging by Nextdoor posts over the last 12 mos.Quite simply, I'd like to purchase a handgun for self defense purposes both in my home, and when I'm out and about (which is infrequent at the moment). The current state of things just reinforces the urgency of this.Due to stimulus money, I have a slight budget, but I'm not sure what to purchase on the cheap. There have been home invasions in the daytime in my area lately, a large nearby homeless (drug user) population that steals from vehicles parked in the street as well as in driveways from cars parked. My main concern is if someone busts in while both of us are home, even during daylight hours. There have been multiple instances of this occurring.I'm a firearms novice. I went to a gun range with my brother over 10 years ago (before cancer) , and fired two of his handguns. A .22 caliber that I was comfortable with (revolver), and a magazine handgun of a larger caliber that had a lot of kick and I put down after firing 2 rounds at the range because it was loud and powerful.Should I purchase a hand gun at a pawn shop, is it cheaper? Can I just buy one without a license since I'm in Oklahoma? Will I jeopardize my social security disability income if I try to purchase a fire arm and have to go through any type of background check? I have no felonies, only speeding tickets from over 10 years ago that are all paid for.Just looking for advice, I'd love to take a firearms course if available to learn gun safety, but not sure what's available right now due to the virus.Ideally I'd like to spend no more than three hundred dollars for a handgun and lessons, but Im not sure if that's realistic. For now if I can just purchase the hand gun, keep it in my home (no children) in case I need to defend myself and my girlfriend, that will do for now. Due to my disability, I can't work since standing, crouching, squatting for prolonged periods takes a toll on me, but otherwise I have no short term physical limitations, so any recommendations for type of hand gun will be fine in a short crisis situation.Apologies in advance for any incorrect terminology, seeking advice, thank you in advance. There was an incident recently I remember hearing about on the news where someone was knocking on someone's door relentlessly, and shouting to let them inside the home. The home owner warned multiple times that he was armed and for the potential intruder to leave, but the man continued to knock and eventually kicked the door in and the home owner opened fire after he crossed the threshold of his front door. I want to be able to defend myself and my girlfriend if a similar situation occurs. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/3dqvFVE
