Old school Smith and Wesson semiautos

Have any of you guys up here ever carried any of the old school Smith and Wesson semiautos? (Model 4506, Model 59, etc.) I'm interested in learning what price you got it for, how long it lasted, do you still use it, can you still find mags for it, etc. (I ask because a family member is thinking about buying a cheap .45 caliber pistol for home defense, and I think one of these S&W's might be a good option. I also told them that it might be better financial wise to just get a double stack 9mm, because the ammo will be cheaper).
