Initial Gen 5 g19 impression.

First let me say I am nowhere near being a glock fanboy. I've sold more than I own, but do own a 19 & 26 gen 4. Also for reference own/owned 320's, PPQ's, M&P (shield) and a bunch of the classic sig P-series guns including the Legion. To me I could care less of the manufacture reputation and more about the utility of the gun itself. Now that's out of the way. Let's begin.Let me start by my "complaint" with the current gen 4 glocks. The first issue for me is I will get the "glock knuckle" so I have to get the trigger guard undercut. The finger grooves are not a problem for me as my fingers fit pretty nicely into them (I wear large size gloves, no fat fingers), but the grooves tend to push my middle finger into the trigger guard. Also not a big fan of the stock trigger, the're ok, but I replace mine with the apex flat trigger kit that has the gen 3 trigger bar. Doesn't lighten the trigger, just a smoother pull. Lastly for me, my fundamentals in shooting always have to be tight or my accuracy can be off at times. There's a reason that at least once a week in almost any gun forum, someone complains about low and left while shooting. Fundamentals have to be good meaning there really isn't a lot of room for error imo.The gen 5 is imho a drastic improvement of the glock. It's taken about 36 years but they are getting very close to perfection out of the box., The trigger is much improved, it feels almost identical to my apex trigger. They have removed the "bump" you find on the gen 4 trigger bar, it's much closer to the gen 3. While not flat, the trigger shoe is smoothed out. I measured 5.2lbs right out of the box. After about 400 rounds down range, it is consistently under 5lbs, I tend to get around 4.12 -4.14 range with my lyman gauge. No need for an aftermarket trigger at all unless you're a gamer or very competitive shooter. What they have done it appears is the trigger plunger is now more of a "ramped" shape that the round shape that allows for a smoother pull. I also have minus connectors in my gen 4, the oem connector in the gen 5 is totally good to go for me.The second thing that I think is huge is the match barrel they use. This is by far the most accurate stock handgun I've ever shot. The recoil spring is a tad longer for better recoil management, hard to tell any difference when I compared to my gen 4 19 but certainly good recoil management. The lack of finger grooves certainly improve the ergonomics and so far, it also seems to eliminate the glock knuckle and the need to undercut the trigger guard for me, at least through 400 rounds. In the past, no way I get even 50 rounds in without experiencing the glock knuckle issue. Your hand size will dictate the extent of this for you. Also the front of the grip has a definitive space as part of the flared magwell. I thought this might be an issue or even pinch my pinky which sits right on it but again, no issue so far at all. I do like the flared magwell, and is a nice little feature. The one negative for me (you lefties will like this) is the ambi slide stop lever. I have a pretty high purchase on the gun with my support hand so the gen 4 slide stop sits flush on the frame. The gen 5 does not and sticks out just enough that if my support hand hits it at all, the slide will lock back. For those that use 3rd party extended slide stop, doubt it will be an issue for you but for me, it is.To me those are the significant performance issues that have improved the gun dramatically, other things like the finish, or the magazine follow are more cosmetic but nice touches. They do offer some with the ameriglo sights, haven't seen any of those yet, but I will say this. My accuracy is so good with this gun that I would consider keeping the crappy plastic oem sight because I am totally dialed into the sights on this one. Poa/poi seems to be center of the dot and not the top edge of the front site. Those are my initial impressions so far with about 400 rounds into it. If it stays reliable, which I expect it to, this for me, without question is the best glock to date and frankly I thought maybe I overpaid to get one this weekend but I wouldn't hesitate to pay it again given the results I've had with it so far. There is really nothing out of the box I will change at all on the gen 5 glock other than the sights. If you're a glock fan, you will love this gun. If you're not, I would absolutely give this a try when the finally show up as range where you can rent one to shoot. Those are my initial thought so far, it's still a little early (only 400 rounds) but so far I am really like it a lot. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2vD0U9z
