Amendment IIA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. I know the knee-jerk reaction of most people around here will be that "Yes of course I support the 2nd Amendment! How dare you even ask!". However, please take a moment to really think about the 2nd Amendment and what it literally says/means - and then give an honest answer here.I'm curious what people really think on this issue in this sub. The amendment itself is very simple - the government has no constitutional authority to restrict or regulate the weapons owned by any Citizen of the United States.Just as the first amendment preceding it - no allowance is made for revoking this right under any circumstance or for any reason. Just as convicted murderers/felons are still allowed to say whatever they want and follow whatever religion they want once they get out of prison - they can pick up their guns again as well.Similarly just as one doesn't need any training or common sense whatsoever in exercising free speech - lack of training/common sense can not constitutionally affect someone's right to own(keep) or carry(bear) weapons (firearms or any others, from a strict constitutional sense).I know that these are extreme examples - and that is intentional. Per the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States - which is typically held up as one of the major cornerstones of our society: Keeping and Bearing arms is a RIGHT - not a privilege. It can't be taken away from any citizen for any reason, ever. Now - I'm not personally taking one side or the other here. I think a strong argument can be made for either side - with many (probably most) positions between the polar extremes regarding this amendment.I also realize this is just a theoretical exercise - the Constitution has been more a set of general suggestions for government than hard rules for a lot of years now, and that is unlikely to change any time soon...so even those who openly disagree with the 2nd amendment don't want to introduce a new amendment retracting it, because it isn't required...I'm just legitimately curious where people stand on it here. I've seen a lot of posts in this subreddit which indicate that a surprising number (possibly the majority) of people even in this subreddit would oppose actual literal interpretation/enforcement of the 2nd amendment - and many people are only "Pro-2A" because it is used as a suggestion rather than a rule. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2tGwyUb
