/r/CCW Hits 30k Subscribers! Here is the State of the Union!

30k Subscribers! This is a seriously impressive achievement. /r/CCW has been around for more than 5 years. During that time, the community has grown exponentially. At one time, /r/CCW was a subreddit that contained only CCW-related posts, since there were very few like-minded redditors to discuss the topic with. Today, /r/CCW has evolved into a subreddit that offers the best practices, techniques, mindset, gear, exchange of knowledge and experience, and anything else relating to self-defense. We are proud to be a part of this community and we hope you all are too. Top PostsWe all agreed that it would be a good idea to celebrate reaching 30,000 subscribers by sharing with you some of the top posts of all time. The number 1 top post of all time hit the front page of reddit and is responsible for us receiving over 400 subs in a single day (for those of you that looked at the traffic stats). Here it is:What do you say to authorities without incriminating yourself if (god forbid) you ever have to use deadly force? We also wanted to take a look at a couple other top posts in no particular order. These are within the top 10 of all time (at time of writing).Just got my CCW....Nailed it.Lastly, in contrast with the humorous post above, a sobering reminder of why we are here:A "no guns" sign posted on a bullet riddled door from the Chattanooga shooting today.. Here are few more stats on the subreddit:StatResultRank1,614Total subscribers30,000Best day for new subscribers3/20/2014 (463)Average new subscriber per day~30Busiest day in the weekMondayAverage unique users per day4,070Average page hits per day15,466 Rule UpdatesEvery day this subreddit grows. And as always, with more traffic comes more challenges. As your moderation team, our goal is to keep this subreddit on topic with valuable content, while limiting the amount of moderator intervention. We are always looking to improve our rules to meet these goals. Many of our current rules have been spurred by feedback we have received from the community. We believe that that this “State of the Subreddit” post would be a good time to propose some additional changes to our rules. As always, community input is of the utmost importance to us, and will play a substantial role in deciding whether these rules are to be put in place. The proposed changes are as follows: Proposed change for Rule 1:Content Not Applicable: Any post that does not directly relate to self-defense.Summary of change: We have been receiving feedback from the community that we should broaden the types of allowable content on this subreddit. Removing the word "directly" in the current version of Rule 1 would allow the moderators more discretion in deciding what constitutes topical content. The moderation team wants to receive more feedback from the community regarding whether our current rules are too strict, or whether our current policy is sufficient. We recognize that if the types of allowable content are broadened too far, /r/CCW will turn into another general firearm-related subreddit. There is a line somewhere that we don't want to cross, and we would like your assistance in drawing that line. Proposed changes for Rule 2:Spam: (a) Any posting, including self-posts, links, and comments, posted to this subreddit for the primary purpose of getting pagehits for personal blogs, e.g. "clickbait". (b) Posts for the sole purpose of soliciting business for private interests. Bloggers and Sellers view this page to see what you can and cannot do.Summary of changes: We have clarified what is and is not allowed for bloggers and companies under Rule 2. This Wiki Page describes our philosophy on these changes. New Rule (number 8):Post Descriptions: (a) Link/image posts require a description in the comments, unless the post title adequately describes the contents. This description must contain, at the very least, a statement of how the post relates to self-defense; or it could be a thought, summary, or question in order to foster discussion in the comments. (b) If the post is a picture of your carry setup, it must contain more than just a photograph of your weapon. You must post a comment describing your carry setup, and a summary of your thoughts on it.Reasoning: This is the rule we have come up with to combat generalized low-quality posts, including the "hey look at my gun, even though you have seen it 1000 times before" posts. We already recommend the poster does this, however we rarely enforce the rule since it has yet to be posed to the community for approval. We really want the communities’ feedback on this - especially the part where it says "unless the post title adequately describes the contents". For the moderation team, it would be easy to have a bright-line rule stating “any post without a description will be removed.” However, often times a post title adequately describes the content, and thus a comment would be redundant at best, and pointless at worst. Our proposed change would provide moderators the discretion to apply common sense in determining what posts require a description and what posts do not. However, as with any discretionary rule, issues may arise where a poster disagrees with the moderation team regarding whether a post title adequately describes the contents. We would like to know the thoughts of the community on this matter. Ideas for the future:We would again like your feedback on the following ideas:AMA's from persons and/or companies of interestCCW Drill MatchesTagging on PostsAllowing manufacturers to post anything in the weekly Freedom Friday thread Also as a reminder you can customize your own flair. We welcome any feedback you have have on the proposed changes, as well as any additional suggestions relating to /r/CCW.It is you, the community, who make this a great place. We look forward to working with you to keep this subreddit the fantastic community that it is. Sincerely,Your Moderation Team via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/1YbSWgc
