Here's a hypothetical scenario. I'm walking down the street and someone pulls a knife on me and threatens to stab me to death. I am in fear for my life and draw my gun and fire three rounds. Two hit the man with the knife killing him, but one missed and hit a woman nearby who was not posing any threat and she dies as well.
