Is the average person slow at reacting and picking up on someone potentially punching them?

I don't want to be that dude whose too casual or gets so emotional that they don't see the punch and bam! Night night. I want to be aware and would rather assume that someone is gonna do something. Just that split second could mean the difference between you being slept or getting away unscathed.
