Self Defense + Concealed Carry for young couple

I [M 26] and my wife [F 23] have been seeing the crazy-ness going on in the U.S. and have discussed ways to protect ourselves in potentially dangerous situations. We are both small in stature, and would need to be physically capable in warding off a potential attacker. I know nothing about self defense but we want to be able to be "combat ready", meaning physical and emotional training to be able to control an encounter. So, couple questions:

  1. Where could we get military-esque training without going to boot camp? Does the military/police force do a particular discipline (jiu jitsu, etc.)? If so, is there a preferred method?
  2. What kind of physical training requirements could we hold ourselves to, to be physically capable?
  3. Are there trainings/classes that one can take to learn how to deal with stressful situations and having a gun at the same time? I don't think it's enough these days to just have a gun and know how to shoot. You have to handle a situation that requires extreme focus, discipline and practice.

In general, we want some advice on these things. We're not afraid, but we want to be prepared for anything. Where do we start?
