The FBI released the numbers for background checks (FFL gun sales) for the first 5 months of 2021. The state with the most gun sales through the first five months was Illinois at 5,285,820. Illinois only has 4% of the national population but accounted for 27% of the nation's gun sales from January through May. To put that in perspective, Kentucky came in 2nd with 1,328,162 sales.
