Got pulled over today.

State of NM.Sherrif was tailgating me for about a quarter mile, then pulled me over.Sherrif claims that she couldn't run my plate because my factory trailer hitch obstructs my plate.I handed over license, registration, insurance, and my CCW permit. Informed the sheriff that I was carrying, holstered appendix.I was disarmed, detained, and my vehicle was searched. I did not consent to the search. I was not cited for any offense or suspected of any crime. The sheriff lost my CCW permit sometime during the search, and I had to wait for them to find it, because they didn't want me anywhere near my now-unloaded firearm.I'm pretty sure this was an illegal search, but is there any action I can take against the sheriffs department for this? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2PzAJzL

Hey guys and girls, I was hoping you could help me with my search! There was a holster company who made a unicorn kydex holster that wasnt t5 that I saw a while back. Is there possibility for a passive protection against pepper spray?

I have no ill intentions, first off, but I have reason to believe that at least one person who might be out for me is armed with pepper spray. I carry a telescopic baton for personal defense, but my ability to defend myself would be quickly nullified by pepper spray.

Outside a gas mask, is there any way I could prepare myself to take it better? Optimally to the extent of being able to defend myself even after being sprayed?

Grappling

Hi, I am currently boxing (have been boxing for a few years) and feel my stand up game is at a decent level, but I am looking to take up a grappling art. I am not looking to compete, primarily for fitness, self defense, and pure appreciation of martial arts in general. I’d love to do Muay Thai but unfortunately there are no gyms in my area, just boxing, wresting, and BJJ.

Since I am already boxing, which would be most ideal for me to learn alongside it: BJJ or wrestling? Also speaking in terms of providing skills and assets to defend myself or my loved ones (obviously apart from talking them down or running). BJJ provides ground game to end a fight but seems dangerous unless it’s a guaranteed one on one. Wrestling provides great takedown ability/defense and one good slam could definitely end a fight. Both provide great cardio and overall fitness.

Any ideas or pointers on which route I should go? I’d still box to keep my hands sharp, but primarily focus on one of the grapple arts.

Have you ever experienced suspicion from family or friends after them finding out that you carry?

My family isn't anti-gun nor were they ever against the idea of me owning one whenever the conversation came up. Once they found out that I actually carry, they would immediately question me with suspicion and shock. It makes me feel uncomfortable and almost guilty for owning a firearm despite knowing that I will only use it for self defense and for the defense of others, including them. It seems like some cant shake the idea of good people owning guns. Can anyone relate? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2zDhRoH

(Scenario) Duty to Retreat vs. Mass Shooter

Some States have a Duty to Retreat on the books or (like the state I'm in) in case law. Roughly, Duty to Retreat means you have to try to escape a situation rather than fight. I'm not sure how you prove that you tried to escape but my very limited understanding based on a case in my own state is that if you cannot prove you tried to escape before using deadly force you're looking at 2nd degree murder. In the context of a mass shooting in a State where you have a Duty to Retreat you could face criminal prosecution if you engaged the shooter rather than retreating (if that was an option for you). We've had discussions before on how we might handle a situation like being in a mass shooting and there are two camps, the John McClane camp (Yippie-Ki-Yay, Motherfucker!) and...well I don't think they make movies about the 2nd camp which is, Take care of yourself and your loved ones.So now the John McClanes have another thing to consider, are you in a Duty to Retreat State? Does that even matter to you? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2Leod3i

On Training and Reactions

Yesterday, I nearly died.I'm licensed for conceal carry in my state, and I strap a 13 round (12+1) Sig P365 on the daily.I was carrying at the time.I thought I'd be ready, mentally, for any situations that might arise where I'd need to defend myself. I practiced drawing. I shot targets. I'm a veteran. But nothing prepared me for the day when a 100+ lb Akita and his buddy found an open gate in their fence and came bounding, literally across the street, out to murder the ever loving hell out of my dog who did nothing but pee on a plant during a walk.Instead of reacting by drawing and putting rounds into these animals that together clearly outmassed my dog and I combined, I threw myself at the bigger of the two and tried to pull it off. Drawing my weapon didn't even cross my mind until I was already in the fray, and by that time the thoughts going through my head were:1) If I let go of this animal, my dog might die.2) Even if that's not the case, I might hit my dog and I'd never forgive myself.3) There are at least four children watching right now. Do I want to scar them by blowing fido's brains out on the pavement? There was too little thinking in the beginning, and there was too much thinking in the middle. I don't know if this is the result of an unexpected situation, something I'd never trained for, or if this is how I'd react to dangerous situations of all types - uncertain of when drawing is appropriate. It's hard to say, as this is the first and only time I've found myself with the need to defend my life and that of a dear pet.How do I make absolutely sure that I act appropriately in the future? I'm lucky that I got away with 13 stitches and five puncture wounds, but that could have easily been my life, or that of my dog. I'm not even sure what stopped the attack.I don't ever want to experience this, or any similarly dangerous situation, again and react the same way. I need advice. Please help. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2NGu8B1

Vedder light tick appendix printing

Questions about when to draw on someone on your property, but not in the home.

I have been making an effort to learn more and more about when it is appropriate to draw a weapon and when it is not, and I'd like to ask a couple of questions. There are a few scenarios in particular that have happened on my property that got me into gun ownership for self defense. We have had issues with people and animals in our backyard. This is in a neighborhood. The backyard is fenced in with a privacy fence and the gates are locked. Now, obviously if someone breaks in and I see them in the backyard, I'm just going to call the police and let them handle it. If, however, I hear a noise or something and want to go check it out, at what point can I draw my firearm? If I have it concealed and find someone armed, would I be within my rights to draw and/or fire? What if they are armed, but not with a firearm? This is in SC, and there is no retreat requirement, but I'm still interested in what is best practice.I am not interested in being a hero, but I am also not interested in being the victim of a crime.I had a similar situation which I feel like I handled well. I was cleaning some fireworks trash out of my driveway late at night (it was Fourth of July) when a strange car pulls up in front of my house and turns off the lights, but leaves the engine running. The driver is staring me down. I had my firearm in my pocket. I did not draw it, but I did put my hand on it. I took a defensive stance and slowly backed away towards my house. He seemed to get the hint and drove off. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/30LdUdn

Subcompact double action 9s

Hey all, I'm still pretty new to handguns, and am looking for advice/experience/ideas about subcompact carry pistols in 9mm.My first (and so far only) handgun is an SP-01 tactical. I've had it a few months and have about 500 rounds through it so far, and I'm loving it. I'm already pretty sure my next purchase will be a P-01 to go with it. However, I'm a chronic overthinker, so I've been reading all I can about subcompact 9mms in preparation for picking a more discreet carry gun for down the line. To be honest, concealed carry on an EDC basis really doesn't fit my lifestyle right now* (see note at end of post). But I'm looking at my options ahead of time with the idea that I can at least decide what I want, have it in hand, and start training with it. I could also get my permit so I'd have my options open.I've read a lot about keeping your carry/defense guns on a single platform to keep training and manipulation constant across the lineup. That makes sense to me. I also feel most comfortable with double action triggers for safety reasons. I think the P-01 will be an excellent compact for me. However, I'm a pretty skinny guy and won't be able to conceal a P-01 in the summer very easily. For a more concealable, social compromise type gun, that seems to leave me with single stack DAOs, as DA/SA seems to be tricky to fit into a platform much smaller than a RAMI. (I got to hold a RAMI last weekend, and it felt like a brick. Seems to me a gun worth stepping down from the P-01 for would have to be around an inch or thinner.)I'm aware of the Sig P290RS, Kel-Tec P-11 and PF-9, Ruger LC9 (original hammer-fired version), and various flavors of Kahr. There don't seem to be a lot of other DAO options in that size range, and those I've listed all have their fans and detractors. I guess what I'm looking for is any advice or experience you all have regarding these or similar alternatives. Are Kahr's more reliable than their online reputation seems to suggest? Are Kel-Tecs? Would it be a bad idea to go with the (recently) discontinued P290RS (maybe my top choice right now)? Am I overthinking the idea of sticking with DAOs? If the training similarity is less important than I've come to understand, this whole quest would get a lot simpler and I'd just pick up a P365, standard or XL (maybe one of each).Sorry for the long-winded, meandering post, and thanks for your input if you're still with me. Like I say, I'm probably overanalyzing this, and that's ok to tell me too. There just seems to be a LOT to learn out there, and it's tough to sift through it all and know what's important to pay attention to.*It's illegal to carry at my workplace (university campus) in my state, and also illegal to carry anywhere alcohol is served and consumed. Between those two restrictions, there are very few times I leave the house where it'd even be an option--maybe the odd trip to the grocery store. Between that, not having a family to look after, and the high level of safety in my town, there's more disincentive than reason to carry for me at this point in my life. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/30Ou0TK

Risks vs Benefits of CCW?

Assuming I am an average person with average mental health and live in an average crime rate (across the US) neighborhood, what scenario do you think has a higher chance of happening?Scenario 1: I use the gun for self-defense and succeed in saving my life and not shooting any innocent bystanders.Scenario 2: Something bad happens such as: I have an accidental shooting and hurt myself/others. Or I use the gun to kill myself in a depressive suicidal bout. Or I use the gun in an angry rage and murder someone. Or other people accidentally shooting my gun (such as children). Or someone takes the gun from me and shoots me with it. Or I try to use it for self-defense but I miss and shoot an innocent bystander.I am not anti-gun whatsoever. I love guns and am a huge 2A supporter. But I have some family members who feel that the risks of owning a gun outweigh the possible benefits. I put together some hypotheticals that they threw at me. I understand this is the CCW subreddit so it obviously is going to be biased but I would like to hear your take on it. Thanks! via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2HNwj27

First time poster, long time lurker.State/county: Oregon, LaneGun/holster/wants: Currently have a sig 320c fit with a Enforece aplc carried in a A&R Designs Holster. Wouldn't mind trying a hybrid holster but I have 2 concerns: finding one that is molded for the aplc, and finding one that doesn't close the opening after draw making it harder to re-holster. Also been eyeballing the sig p365. Had a close call this evening

A 30lb Jack Russel mix came at my dog on our evening walk. Third dog in 3 days I’ve seen off leash roaming my neighborhood. Other two weren’t aggressive, but this one lunged at my dog and tried to bite her. Yanked her back and she wasn’t bleeding so I guess the dog missed. She handled herself very well and did not engage, but I very seriously considered shooting it. Fortunately the dog turned and went home. The owner waved at me from her porch and it took a lot of control to not yell at her to control her animal before it gets itself killed. The dog approached from across the street and almost got hit by a car approaching us. It is illegal in my city to have a dog off leash off of your own property.I worked as a veterinary technician for the last two years and am in the process of reapplying to colleges of veterinary medicine after being “selected as an alternate for admission” (waitlisted) this year. so I probably have a little more patience and ability to read aggressive dogs than your average Joe. I believe this is part of why I was so hesitant to put it down. I do plan on approaching the owner in the near future to calmly express my concern for the animal’s safety and her financial security, as well as explain the legality of the situation. I do not plan to inform her that her dog was seconds from being shot in the street because of her recklessness, but focus more on the possibility of my 70 lb lab killing or injuring her dog, or the dog getting run over.Takeaways:Defensive gun usages are not limited to humansI’m glad I’ve started carrying AIWB primarily I don’t think I would’ve been as quick to react had I been carrying at 4 o’clock as I used to.Very glad the situation diffused without the need to draw and fire. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2HAqchr

Self defense while on blood thinners: legal standard lowered?

I'm more likely to die as a result of not clotting as I take blood thinners permanently despite being middle aged, I have since I was in my twenties. Since I'm more likely to die of a blow, bullet or stab wound as a result of not clotting, is there any case law that shows there is a lower standard for self defense?

First time CCW, need to find a good holster for my M2.0 Compact 3.6”

Recently moved to Arizona and I am planing on carrying for the first time as it is legal here. I am on the slimmer side (6’1” 170) and do not plan on wearing undershirts because of the heat here (in the winter I will). Anyone have any recommendations for positioning of a holster, as well as a specific holster that I can use which would not be bothersome to wear without an undershirt and still comfortable, but not too revealing. Which Glock Glocks Your Glock? (Advice on Glock for Carry)

First post here, so I hope I don't get anything wrong, so here we go:I am 5' 9", 180lbs, pretty decent shape. I have been carrying for about five years. Generally I have always carried smaller single stack guns, and I am looking into carrying a Glock for reasons of grip angle/natural point of aim based on training (I use a glock 17 for local matches) as well as the aftermarket support for magazines, etc, etc. I am looking at current line up of 43, 43x, 48. I decided against the 19, since I do find the single stack guns a lot more comfortable.Concern 1) Will the extra grip length be an issue if I already have some issues with grip extensions? I carry appendix with a simple kydex single clip holster, and while not impossible, it is much more difficult for me to conceal w/out printing with a grip extension. I have been told a holster with a claw will greatly remedy printing with longer grips. I understand some of it comes down to a wardrobe thing, being former military I do have a hard time letting go of some clothing fitment preferences.Concern 2) Will longer barrel be issue for long term wear/comfort? Having never carried a 19 length bbl pistol, has anyone (who may be comparable to my size) had any issues with a 4 in bbl in appendix carry in terms of pokey-poking into your leg/wobbly bits?Lastly, anything you guys think I am overlooking? Any feedback would be appreciated.tl;dr concerns about various size issues of 48/43x vs plan 'ol 43, thoughts?EDIT: tl;dr and formatting via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2PopFFH

Should I get something larger for winter carry?

Relatively new to CC life, I've been carrying a P365 in a Concealment Express IWB holster for most of the summer now. Love being in a constitutional carry state!I'm looking for advice on getting something larger for winter carry. Probably will stick with a Sig for continuity and to support a local company. I'm torn on just getting another 12 round mag and carrier or p320 variant (rx compact or x5 legion). If I pass on the new gun I could afford at least another class or two at Sig Academy, so I've gotta factor that in too.I dress casual 99% of the time, next month I'll be wearing hoodies or long sleeves most of the time, so I'm not worried about concealment really. If you’re pulled over and NOT carrying, do you still present your CCW? Michigan

I took a refresher class over the weekend and my biggest take away was how this instructor talked about being pulled over. When I took my initial classes, our instructor told us whether you’re carrying or not, when pulled over you should pass over your CCW with your license and verbally make it known that you are licensed to carry. This instructor on Saturday said that you should only produce your CCW if you’re carrying, that it could cause issues if you hand it over without carrying. The officer could give you an issue if he/ she has disbelief in your statement about not carrying. Also, I don’t know if this is true or not, but he said that officers in Michigan no longer can see on their car screens, prominently, whether or not you have a CCW so they’re essentially walking blind to your car after running your plates. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2NEhgLz

How proficient should your aim be?

I have a decently fast draw (only slightly over a second) and I've practiced sitting and standing. At the range I can stay within the 8-circle, sometimes 7, at 7 yards. I've only fired roughly 150-200 rounds in my life, only got a handgun as I got into CCW a month ago, so I'm not as experienced as many of y'all when it comes to shooting and guns in general. Is there a level of accuracy you would consider as "acceptable"? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/328dbmY

Concealed carry after rehab?

FLORIDAA little over 5 years ago I was arrested for a dui, my one and only. As a result of this I had to undergo a substance abuse evaluation which resulted in me going to rehab. My question is, since the courts didn't specify any involuntary commitment and only that I follow the recommended treatment, would that be considered a disqualifying result? The facility that I went to was not locked, I was free to leave at any time. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2UasVTT

Going to apply for my CCP this weekend at my first gunshow.

Going to the gun show to look at different options of my first carry. Probably won’t leave with one but it’ll give me a good idea of what I like and what feels nice in the hand. Are there any tips or guidelines when going to a gun show that I should be aware of? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2Pkxxrx
