What self defense isn't

/u/theopresent asked me to make a post after I commented on another asking about kicks to the head in a self defense situation.

There are a couple of scenarios where they come up.

  1. You Bruce Lee some mf while they are standing
  2. You have them on the ground

If #2, you're going to jail most likely. #1 you're most likely going to get that kick caught and end up in position #2. I was always taught not to kick above the bottom 3'ish ribs anyway (up to the base of the sternum) as you are severely vulnerable during and after the kick if you miss.

Self defense is the right to use the minimum amount of violence necessary to get away. It is not the right to brutalize an opponent. Kicks to the face in either scenario could easily, and often will be, construed as excessive force if something goes very south and your attacker dies or something.

Of course there is no clear definition of excessive force, but you probably aren't a cop and won't get away with it. About the only way I see deadly force, eg a shin kick to the throat for a #2, flying past in a trial is if they are armed with a firearm, but you better damn well have some video of them trying to get back up and shoot you and/or don't get caught putting their weapon back in their hand. Once again you aren't a cop.
