Have a firearms question for people that live in Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky and Ohio

I'll be travelling from Florida to Ohio later this year. I'd like to take my handgun with me but reading through all these statutes is mind numbing. Can residents of the above states give me a quick run down of the laws regarding firearms in vehicles and general CCW laws? I have a CCW from Florida, and my CCW is recognized in all the above states. Thanks via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2xLgHG0

Shoutout to Alien Gear Holsters after total loss house fire

After following this subreddit for years I invested over $250 into Alien Gear Holsters and used their holsters every day. After an unfortunate house fire I lost everything except what was in the Gun Safe. The house burnt to the ground. None of my alien gear holsters were in the safe at the time.I was finally able to place an order for some new holsters and a belt and after calling about my order status I mentioned the house fire. Cheryl with Support immediately told me to email her with my email receipts and a fire report. After an hour I got an email back with all of my previous holsters and belt shipped at no charge. She even upgraded me to the new cloak tuck 4.0.I seriously cant thank Alien Gear Holsters enough. It has been hard to slowly replace everything after a house fire and I haven't been able to carry anything but my Ruger LCP2 since. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2xOj3FC

Any S&W Shield .40 deals anyone knows of?

I just fired a S&W Shield .40 and liked it. Gonna use it for my CCW. They have one brand new at the gun shop for $375+tax but I've searched around and have going past (expired) deals for $200-$300 brand new. Anyone know of any deals for one that aren't expired? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2g0zF3L

9mm, no manual safety, single and double stack recommendations for concealment? Preferably DA/SA.

Hey all, been doing some research lately on what I would get if I ever gain access to a CCW (SD county CA resident, so it may be a while), and wanted some recommendations/thoughts from you guys.Since this is just theoretical anyway, money is no object, nor am I worrying about the CA roster, as, again, this is just theoretical right now anyway.Requirements:1. 9mm2. no manual safety3. on the smaller/lighter side of things. (My body time is fairly slim, so trying to conceal my full sized SP2022 isn't easy/comfortable.)Preferences:1. Likely hammer fired, but I've seen some striker fired I really like, such as the Walthers I have listed.2. DA/SA trigger for safety, as I don't want a manual safety.I want to determine both a single and double-stack option, as I haven't decided yet on which way I'd go. I haven't attempted concealing anything other than the 2022 (only in my house of course), so I just don't know if I can conceal what I prefer, a double-stack, or if I'll have to go with the lower capacity single-stack for comfort/improved concealability. The following charts show the guns on my radar right now.Double Stacks:Make/Model/PriceCA Roster?Trigger/Fire TypeCapacityWeight (oz)Dimensions (inches)ProsConsWalther P99c AS $660NoDA/SA Striker w/ Decocker (Anti-stress)10+121.5 (empty)6.6 LAdjustable windagePaddle-style mag releaseDA: 9 lbs4.3 HNice sightsRequires adapter to fire full-size magazines (not needed in CA though)SA: 4.5 lbs1.3 WLooks goodGrip looks slick----------------------------------------Beretta PX4 Storm Sub-Compact Type G $570YesDA/SA Hammer w/ Decocker (Type G only)13+126.16.2 LMagazine front lip drops down for pinky grip, flips up for concealHeavyDA: 9.3 lbs4.8 HNice sightsGrip looks slickSA: 5.6 lbs1.4 WKinda ugly----------------------------------------Sig P224 $1,108NoDA/SA Hammer w/ Decocker12+1296.7 LNice sightsHeavyDA: ? lbs4.5 HGrip looks grippyExpensiveSA: ? lbs1.4 WIt's a Sig----------------------------------------Sig P239 Gen2 Compact $1,000YesDA/SA Hammer w/ Decocker8+129.56.6 LNice sightsHeavyDA: 10 lbs5.1 HLooks sexyExpensiveSA: 4.4 lbs1.2 WSame trigger pulls as my SP2022No rail----------------------------------------CZ 2075 RAMI BD $680NoDA/SA Hammer w/ Decocker10+1266.5 LLight SA trigger pullLight DA trigger pullDA: 9.6 lbs14+1 Extended4.7 HLooks goodHeavySA: 5.3 lbs1.25 WNice sights----------------------------------------Glock 26 $550YesSA Striker10+121.76.4 LLow bore axisLooks like a glock5.5 lbsWorks with other glock mags4.2 HCheapNo rail1.18 WSingle Stacks:Make/ModelCA Roster?Trigger/Fire TypeCapacityWeight (oz)DimensionsProsConsWalther PPS M2 $500NoSA Striker6/7/8+121.16.3 LSA Striker4.4/4.0/5.3 H1.0 W----------------------------------------Springfield XDSNoSA Striker7+1 Flush236.3 LVery slimSA Striker8+1 Extended4.4 H.9 W----------------------------------------Ruger LC9s $360NoSA Striker7+117.26.0 LVery lightSA Striker4.5 H.9 WSo guys, what guns am I missing? If anyone would care to add to the discussion, I’m hoping to gather some airport policy experiences as some airport handling policies may defer from the airline handling policies from state to state, airport to airport. Just tryin to collect some useful information for those that may be traveling for the first time with their weapon, or maybe the first time to that particular state or airport. Please comment the original post, and feel free to add any states or airports you don’t see in the post. Shoulder holster recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a good shoulder holster that would be decent quality but not particularly expensive? I tried one of the cheap ones from Amazon and while fit on my body and gun were actually quite good, I ended up returning it because I couldn't adjust it back far enough into my body so the grip of my gun was poking out very obviously.I wear a fair amount of suits, plus I live in an area with a long winter so I wear a jacket frequently. I'm 6'3 200lbs with a medium build. I mostly carry a Sig p320c but with a sub compact frame.I'm not keen on spending $200 on Galco, but I would like to hear what other people are having success with. Adjustability is a big factor for me. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2xJ8Ubw

I was unarmed by a police officer

This scenario happened a few weeks ago, I am only now getting around to sharing it.I live in a somewhat large city in South Florida. As I’m sure you are aware most of Florida was effected by Hurricane Irma. Although it could have been a lot worse, my area was without power for several days, there were a lot of power lines, trees, and other hazards down. For these reasons a county wide curfew was put into effect from sun up to sun down. Unfortunately, my wife and I were unaware of this curfew on the first night it went into effect. So here’s what happened:After being without power for close to 24 hours we started to go a little stir-crazy. At this point the storm had passed and we received word that a few restaurants had opened up downtown. We decided we would go. I should mention that we live extremely close to the downtown, touristy area (about a 15-minute walk). If you’ve spent any time in South Florida, you are aware that you can be in a great neighborhood one minute and then find yourself in a not so great neighborhood moments later. We live in a safe, desirable neighborhood but in order to get downtown you have to walk through a somewhat questionable area (not the best but far from the worst). Anyways, we walked into town later in the afternoon, had a bite to eat, met with some friends, and lost track of time. It wasn’t until the sun was already setting that we learned about the curfew. The curfew forced the businesses to close so we started our walk home. We make this walk almost daily and have never had a problem. This area I’m am talking about really isn’t so bad, there is just some riffraff that drifts in once in a while. So we are walking home and it is dark at this point. We enter the so-so area and we see several cop cars with lights on ahead. We continue to walk. As we get closer to the officers we see that they are talking with a younger guy who appeared to be pretty cracked out, possibly homeless. I still don’t know what happened, but the conversation between the police and said homeless guy ended with an officer yelling “Get the hell out of here!” he complied. As my wife and I witness this, we also come to the realization that the street ahead of us (the only way home) is pitch black since all of the street lights are out. Not a great feeling. At this point I’m kicking myself for putting us in this situation. Like always I am carrying, but of course I don’t want to have to use my weapon.. ever, if I can avoid it. We decide our best option is to approach the officers. We simply said “Hey there, we live right down the street and are just wondering if it is safe to continue walking this way. We didn’t know about the curfew until it was too late.”They looked around at each other for a minute probably thinking “these idiots” and then one of them spoke up saying “I’d feel a lot better if we just gave you a ride home.” Awesome. At this point I am relieved but also realize it wouldn’t be the best idea to get into the back of a cop car with a loaded firearm. I say “Thank you so much. I have to be up front with you, I have a concealed carry permit. How would you like to proceed?”. I had decided in the past that those are the exact words I would use if ever encountered by a police officer while carrying. I personally think it is wise NOT to use the words weapon, gun, or any other trigger word that could set an officer on edge if he does not properly hear me due to road noise, ect. I should also note that I made it a point to make my hands very visible and nowhere near my weapon as I told the officer this news. The officer simply responded with “That’s fine, are you carrying now?” I told him yes I was. He said “Ok, I’m just going to take the weapon off of you for this ride” I said not a problem and immediately put my arms up higher. He patted my down, asked where my weapon was, I told him it was on my right appendix with a chambered round. He upholstered the weapon and unarmed it. My wife and I climbed into the back on the cop car and off we went, on our way home. We started conversation with the officers and they were as cool as can be. They never asked to see my permit or anything. We pulled into our place, they handed my Glock 43 back and this is the part: the officer says “Thank you for letting us know you were carrying, you handled that situation perfectly. How do you like this Glock? I was thinking of getting one myself.”I’ve always respected the men in blue, but they definitely went up a few notches in my book after that.Next time I will handle the situation “more perfectly” by not allowing myself to get in the situation to begin with.Anything you would have done different? via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2k9OxkL

I just had a ND last night. Super scary!!

Hi all. LTL FTP;TL;DR - WTF FML SMHSo I was cleaning my glock 43 last night. I had all the ammo out of the gun and in a box on the shelf. I cleaned and reasembled the gun and everything seemed ok.I then locked back the slide and put in a full mag. I released the slide andBANG!!!!My ears are ringing and I immediatly set the gun down on the table and started a long swearing session. I now have a hole in my TV and my wall and my floor. I didn't hit myself and nobody was in the house at the time.I am glad I had the gun pointed in a safe direction and down.I am discarding all the ammo in that box and taking my gun to the local gunsmith to get it checked out. I was using Federal HST so it shouldn't have been the ammo, but you never know.I am still shook up about it the next day. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2hCM4ON

Advice for a taxi driver new to CCW

I was recently approved for my permit and received it in the mail! I was raised around firearms for sports shooting but nobody close to me regularly carries as far as I know. I'm also employed as a taxi driver, which I'm sure you know has inherent risks especially during the night shift, which I also predominantly work. I've taken safety courses and basic self defense classes with little mention of vehicle defense.Fortunately my boss is very pro 2A and completely approves of personal protection. I'd like some advice on what might work best as far as carry position, weapon choice, etc. I spend 8 hours or more in a vehicle at a time, and it's been difficult to find much information online about a situation like this.I own a full sized 9mm and a micro 380, I have proper iwb holsters for both and a sturdy belt. I have next to no experience with carrying much less in a confined space like that. Concealment is only important to me while I'm in the car with passengers, because I live in a liberal area and don't want to make the customers uncomfortable. Not too concerned about printing elsewhere.I'm open to any suggestions about how to best defend myself and definitely appreciate it! I do love my job though and have no plans to quit anytime soon... via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2ydagyy

Deciding on a 1911 for ccw, have a few questions

Hey everyone, I'm in the process of shopping around for a new firearm to put into my carry rotation, I currently run a sig 1911 tacops carry with tlr-1 hl (at night). I've been looking around at different carry systems and have decided to stay with the single action, manual safety of the 1911 that I've grown to love.I'm definitely looking for something slightly more compact than what I already have in terms of frame size. Do you all feel that the officer frame offers better concealment while still maintaining your ability to handle the weapon while firing as compared to the slightly larger commander size frame? Also, one of the reasons why I've kept my 9mm handguns around is that they are so affordable to shoot, something that I can't really say for .45 (at least comparably anyway), so I've been looking into the possibility of opting for a 9mm version (maybe a DW valkyrie?) and wanted to know if a 9mm 1911 was just plain ole sacrilege or if its actually viable and if so, how many of you run your 1911s in 9mm. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2fvouiL

On vacation, unarmed. Mentioned it to extended family. Handled it best I could.

Hello fellow intrepid travellers. I come to you today for a bit of advice. I'll try to keep it short.I carry in South Carolina, every day for a little over three years now. My holster is worn and my trusty Glock shows signs of it's duty. Much like an old wallet, my setup is broken in.I'm on vacation with extended family and I left my firearm at home for my own reasons. Most of my family is from the northeast and they simply do not view firearms in the same light I do. They are alright with hunting and some target shooting, but that's about it. They are free to have their own opinions, that's not why I am posting, I'm just trying to set the scene. My cousin is a few years older than me, and I respect her opinion on all sorts of stuff. She has traveled the world in her career and has found herself in sketchier situations than I have had to endure. This might be part of why she doesn't understand why I carry.Last night, she was telling me about how she went and shot some firearms on private land a few months back. She liked it because she was a good shot. I thought that was great and offered to take her shooting if she was ever in town back where I live. Somehow we got on the subject of me carrying a concealed firearm. She knows I carry from a while back, so that wasn't totally new.Anyhow, I mentioned in passing how I felt odd not having my firearm on me. What I meant primarily was that I'm so used to having it on me that it felt like I had left my wallet at home or something. She said my statement scared her, and I just reinforced how I felt like I didn't have my wallet or phone on me. That seemed to put her at ease, and she said you have to choose your words carefully when talking about how I felt. I concealed the fact that I meant exactly what she feared I meant. She thinks there's no place for a concealed firearm at a family gathering. To her, there's nothing to worry about since we are in a safe location with close family. I don't think she could or even wants to understand why I carry even when I feel "safe".OK I started rambling, sorry about that. In conclusion, I continue to excersize situational awareness on my lovely vacation, but I'm perpetually conscious of the fact I'm unarmed. Does anyone else feel this way when on vacation or somewhere you can't have your CCW? Also feel free to roast me for talking CCW with someone I know doesn't believe in it. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2xBNtvI

Thin soft loops?

I got a Dara AIWB rig with softloops. It’s made well, comfy, and more solid than a standard clip...however, the loops kind of stick out. Nature of the beast I suppose but I was curious if anyone knew of any loops I could get that are made of thinner material to prevent this?I would like to stick to the loops or something maybe like an ulticlip. I was walking up a steep hill on campus a couple of weeks ago and holster and gun completely unclipped and fell off my belt. I was lucky enough to grab it but if I hadn’t I would’ve been standing there with a gun at my feet.Maybe even a sidecar like holster with 2 clips would be betterwhat I mean about the loops sticking out via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2yJXswo

Carriers of DA/SA, do you carry cocked and loaded?

When you carry your DA/SA weapon, do you have a round in the chamber and the hammer cocked?I'm curious because I like that striker fired pistols have the same trigger pull every time. The best way to do that with a DA/SA would be to keep it cocked and loaded at all times. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2yvb7GP

What sights do you prefer on a subcompact CCW?

I purchased a Walther PPS M2 to be my CCW (before the rebate was available unfortunately) and have been practicing with it at 28 feet. I cannot seem to get consistent patterns with this thing and thus don't feel comfortable carrying it yet. I have the factory (non LE) sights and the thing I think may be contributing to my struggles is the gap in the notch of the rear sight seams overly large making vertical alignment difficult especially for a pistol with such a short distance between sights - way too much room for misalignment, IMO. I find myself struggling to line up the three dots while keeping the front sight centered between the rears and on target. I think I'd prefer a tighter sight picture. I know it's not all about sights but even when I'm at my very best fundamentally (grip, trigger pull, etc..) my eyes still struggle with the sight picture and I find myself bouncing the front sight back and forth unable to find the center point before pulling the trigger.Anyone have any suggestions on sights with a tight sight picture?EDIT: added example of sight picture via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2yKh1EZ

Do you carry +P? What weight?

Just looking around at ammo and found myself wondering what you guys carry and why.Personally, I've never even shot +P out of my 9mm sp2022 (only handgun). My HD ammo has been Fed 135 grain HST (considering going down to 124 grain, as that weight is closer to the 115 grain range ammo I use), but I also keep seeing +P options while browsing for decent JHP rounds.Does +P have a noticeably stronger recoil? I know it'll be stronger, but enough to be an issue if I don't train with it normally? (Obviously I shoot my HD ammo from time to time anyway though.) Is the ballistic improvement enough to justify carrying it over standard pressure rounds (more similar to range ammo)? Do LEO/military use +P?I'd also like opinions/thoughts on weight. My understanding is that high weights (generally 147 grain for 9mm) will have better penetration (heavier projectile) while lighter weights (generally 115 grain) will have better expansion of JHPs (higher velocity=more hydraulic force on impact). That should, in theory, make heavier ammo better for cold climates (get through heavy jackets), while lighter rounds are better when expecting to not need much penetration, but purely looking for a well expanded bullet so it does as much damage as it can (warmer climates).I know, I know, it's more about rounds on target than these relatively minor considerations so I don't concern myself much with them, but with so many options out there, why not discuss it to death for the sake of discussion itself? So guys, do you carry +P? What weight?Edit: Aaaand, I just found this awesome chart/site. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2fTVAtr

Will leaving a firearm in freezing temperatures for hours in my car damage it?

TX DPS Rant

My dad and I took the class together and both submitted our paperwork on 8/5/17. I did my fingerprints on 8/7/17 and my dad did his towards the end of the week on 8/10 or 8/11. Within days my dad was able to access a list of what documents he had submitted, which ones had been approved, what the status of his license was, etc. I was not able to access this list. About a week after doing his fingerprints my dad received a letter requesting more information due to his place of birth. He submitted this information and received his license in the mail about a week later. I still could not access my license status or list of submitted documents. I emailed the DPS several times over the weeks since then and got the word-for-word same response each time - "Your license is being processed. If we need further information we will contact you by mail." Finally, today, 51 days after I submitted all of my documentation, the online application status portal became available to me and it showed that one of my documents had been rejected. I called and explained why the document looked the way it did and they told me that I needed to put the explanation in writing and have it notarized and that would be acceptable. When I contested that by the time I finished this process, it was accepted by somebody there and the license was finally mailed to me it would surely have passed their 60 day requirement, they informed me that since they require more information the deadline is extended 180 days starting at the time I submit the extra documentation.Obviously this is super worrisome to me since they already waited 51 days to even look at my original application, why should I believe that they won't wait just as long to look at the extra documentation? Not to mention, it's not a required document; it's just a written explanation of why one of the required documents is the way it is. It shouldn't count towards resetting the time limit and especially not towards giving them another six months just to look at it.I guess what really erks me about the whole process is that they really did require extra documents from my dad, but they informed him of that super quickly and then finished processing his application super quickly after he submitted them, yet here I am very near two months after submitting my application and they just now looked at my application for the first time, even though they charged me the fee two months ago when I applied.Fuck the DPS. via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2y9f1sW

Technically, a bit more, since I took the class SC requires on a Saturday, but from the Monday when the mail went out, 80 days later, I have my permit.Time to take my shield out for a walk via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2fzLBMV

Is it worth it to upgrade to a stealthgear ventcore from a crossbreed.

Like the title says I have been considering giving the ventcore line a try. I have carried an M&Pc in a Crossbreed for at least 5 or 6 years and overall I have been very satisfied with it. My only real issue with it is the retention. I know it can be tightened and it feels adequate once it is actually worn on the body, however it does not have the reassuring "click" that some kydex holsters do. After reading all the good things everyone here has to say about Stealthgear I just wanted to hear from some people who have had both and their thoughts on whether it is really an upgrade or pretty much a comparable product depending on personal style (leather vs synthetic). via /r/CCW http://ift.tt/2ytEjhs
