Lost pistol

So a guy in my hometown posted to the local breaking news Facebook page that he lost his pistol on a county road sometime last night. I’m assuming the weapon wasn’t properly secured and fell out of his vehicle but my question here is how do you proceed? He’s reported the gun missing to the police but I severely doubt he’s gonna get it back. How would one make sure they were covered legally in this situation?
