Suggestions for non-firearm CCW alternatives (pepper spray, etc.)?

I'm looking for a non-firearm CCW alternative for emergency defense for a woman who frequently enjoys walking alone after dark (in well lit, good neighborhoods, but just in case). I realize the obvious (and only truly good) answer is a firearm, but it is not an option she will accept yet.While I work on convincing her that only a firearm will truly provide adequate protection, are there any alternatives that come to mind? (Pepper spray, mace, etc? And if so, what brands?) Looking for something easy to use and not too bulky to carry so that she will actually bring it with her.
