Has anyone won or heard of anyone winning a USCCA giveaway?

Just curious. Seems like a get a “we’re giving away $1,200 worth of guns and gear” email every day or two, and it just seems like that must be a ton of expense if anyone is actually claiming these.Wondering of its legit. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2GGohaF

CCW has not arrived yet

I applied for my Iowa CCW on July 1st, and there is supposed to be a 30 day wait time, however some friends of mine have gotten theirs in as little as two weeks after applying. Mine still has yet to come in the mail, and I am getting anxious. I have a perfect record so there would be no reason my application wouldn’t be approved. Restricted to carrying only the weapons listed on CCW?

My apologies in advance if this has been asked previously. Hopefully this is a dumb question, and it’ll be a unanimous YES..So I have a California permit which I’ve only added three weapons to. We can add an unlimited amount, I just haven’t gotten around to it. I was told that in other states, if I’m carrying with my CA permit, I must abide by the rules of that permit. Meaning, only using weapons CA permits me to (weapons are listed on our cards). However, I’ve also got a UT and AZ permit, which to my understanding, allow me to carry whatever handgun I legally own.If I’m traveling outside of CA am I correct in assuming I can carry whatever I want as long as my UT and/or AZ permits are recognized in that jurisdiction? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2Ow0zUZ

Shield owners with apex shoes and full kits

On mobile and this will be long winded and two fold so apologies in advance. My girlfriends birthday is coming up in 2 weeks and I was debating on getting her a shield to go with mine. My current shield is a first gen with a horrendous trigger pull. I’d say 7-8 lbs. you hit the wall and you almost have to jerk it to break it. So I was debating on getting a full apex kit for it and dropping it in and finding her a different shield. I also went out today seeing if I would want to swap from the shield and then I found a deal for a 2.0 for 300 starting tomorrow: saving me a good hundred on a holster and money on mags. (Yay range time funds) So I said decision made I’ll get the 2.0 as I know she does not like the texture and add this to her birthday. So now for the main issues: triggers for both. Obviously with them being edcs I don’t want super light. The gf doesn’t seem to mind the hinges trigger so I figured I’d do just the apex spring kit. Will this fix most of the break issue or should I do the full kit?As for my soon to be acquired 2.0 I know after handling the trigger is night and day from my current shield. So should I do a full kit or just swap the trigger shoes? I’ve got a vp9 and started on a G19 so the hinge trigger and I don’t really get along.Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance! via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2YC8LCV

SERPA holster question

TLDR up front: are all SERPA-style holsters equally unsuitable for serious use, or is the BLACKHAWK SERPA uniquely terrible?Hi all, I'm new to handguns in general and I'm still not at the point where I feel ready to concealed carry. That said, I'm interested in at least getting my CCW license so the option is available to me, and have been reading this sub as part of my research on suitable weapons, gear, and other considerations. My first (and so far only) pistol is an SP-01 tactical. I love it, but I have no intention of carrying 4.5 lbs of gun on me for anything but an emergency, much less as an edc. With that in mind, I figured an OWB, open-carry holster would be fine for this gun. Since it likely won't ever be concealed, I wanted active retention. And since I don't need to be armed for work, level 3 or 4 retention seemed like overkill. These criteria don't leave a ton of options on the table for an SP-01, and after doing some reading I ended up with an IMI SERPA-style holster. I got the paddle attachment rather than a belt loop. After reading the FAQ I understand that SERPAs are not regarded favorably, for reasons having to do with the use of the trigger finger to deactivate the retention mechanism. The IMI I have still uses a trigger finger button for retention. Should I get a different holster? And if so, what are some good recommendations for my use cases? (These are 1. safe storage, transport, and handling of the pistol; 2. draw practice; 3. temporary carry in the unlikely event I need to and have not acquired a more suitable gun for it; and 4. anything else I may be forgetting atm.) Thanks in advance for your advice and input. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/331rXNF

Question about carrying.

I carry every time I leave the house and I make no exceptions for it but lately for a few trips I have had to go without my CCW to go on base, (joint naval base.)I currently reside about 2 1/2 hours from said base and I do not have anywhere to leave my firearm once i get into the city just before going on base, now I know most of you might just say leave it at home but there lies the problem. I usually try to make a day trip out of it if I'm going to be in the city instead of driving 2 hours to base and then 2 hours back. Is there any possible solution to this dilemma or am I basically left with the only option of leaving my firearm at home? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2KfyuM7

Carry Everywhere, my lesson was non-lethal, yours may not be.

Today driving to pick up my little brother, stuck in bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic. The guy in front of me halts, which I realize in retrospect was a brake check. In the moment I just assumed it was a part of DC rush hour traffic and paid no mind to it. A few minutes later he pulls off and starts yelling at me and flips me off, I initially return the gesture then just closed my window and sat there until he gave up and drove off. We both take off, but one of his passengers starts leaning out the window and starts yelling at me (I don't know what, my windows were closed and we were moving). I called 911 at that point to report the bad driving and get stuck on hold while county 911 transfers me to VA state police. Finally, about 1/2 a mile later we both come to a stop, but then I see his reverse lights come on. I immediately check my 6, but I'm boxed in because rush hour, so the inevitable happens and he rams me. At this point VA State Police picks up (right on cue) and I give vehicle description and pulled over. He took off. But in that moment it raced through my mind "what if this got violent?"Given my initial "it's just a quick errand" thoughts I wasn't carrying, and the only weapons I had in the car were a knife and an unloaded, cased up rifle that just happened to be in the car. If it had escalated and he had stopped to confront me I highly doubt I would have been able to defend myself against multiple assailants who themselves may have been armed. I consider myself lucky that he decided to drive off (he got stopped just later because of my report to VSP though). In retrospect I now realize that I got very tunnel-vision. I should have immediately tried to change lanes or take an exit, especially considering I was for all intents and purposes unarmed. But from now on I'm going to be strapped 100% of the time when it's legal because the next time something like this happens I don't want to feel the fear of reaching towards my holster and realizing there's nothing there... via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2YzwA20

Is there any comprehensive study/collection of interviews of citizens after DGUs?

I've lately been wondering if there's any study or collection of interviews setup anywhere of folks who have ever been in DGU scenarios.I think it would be very informative to learn from those who have been through such situations. What they experienced, what they used, how it's affected them since then and how do they behave nowadays after such instances. It may seem silly to some but I've wondered if there are those who've been in DGU scenarios and ended up changing what they carry, what they do, et hoc genus omne.I remember reading about the cop who ended up carrying 100+ rounds of .45 after a particular incident with a substance abuser. Makes me wonder what private citizens' reactions have been after having to use their firearms in self defense.Edit: and yes, I'm also subbed to /r/dgu via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2KbBkBM

Which XDM to get as a small framed female shooter?

Title says it all. I came across some screaming deals on Springfield XD, XDS & XDM pistols because they were the display models. I’m a broke college kid and want a handgun that I can get multiple uses out of, mainly for fun, competition (I shoot rifle competition now, haven’t tried pistol yet) & conceal carry. All the models for sale are either 9mm, .40 or .45, with barrel lengths ranging from 3.3”-4.5”.Currently leaning toward the 3.8” 9mm XDM because I feel like it’ll be versatile and not too much gun for me - I have an issue limp wristing and subsequently stove piping 40s. What do you think? I’m not a pistol expert.I’m about 5’9 and 120 lbs. Small frame. Small hands. My only concern is it printing. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2SWHdqr

Controversial opinion: why almost everyone should buy the Glock 42 over the Glock 43

The never ending caliber debate is something I have thought about for a few years when working at a level 1 trauma center — people survive gun shot wounds from all types of calibers and die from all types of calibers...shot placement + luck is always the decided factor, especially for pistol rounds (rifle GSWs are uncommon even in the extremely violent city I worked in). I typed up a reply to someone to why I am getting a G42 over a G43 and I figured I would share my reasoning with y’all. I expect to rustle some jimmies but I think it is a great discussion to have.**In short, this video changed my mind on .380 vs 9mm. https://youtu.be/T6kUvi72s0YPlease watch it before you reply with a counterargument!**Defensive .380 and 9mm rounds can both achieve 12-18 inches of penetration with >0.5” expansion. That is the standard you need to be able to DIRECTLY hit vital organs which is crucial for a physiological stop with a handgun round. Psychological stops will happen regardless of pistol caliber. After you reach that standard, you are just adding recoil for really no gain until you get into rifle velocities: >2200 FPS approximately.Anyone that can shoot a 43 well can shoot a 42 better. Shot placement is more important than terminal energy with handgun rounds. Single stacks like the 42 and 43 are notoriously hard to shoot. Not only does less recoil help in a DGU, it also makes you more likely to put a lot of rounds through a gun when practicing. Now before the internet mall ninjas jump in with “But I’m not a little bitch and a G43 doesn’t hurt my hand at all when I shoot.” Cool, but after 500-1000 rounds over two days I would highly doubt you’re not lying, and even if you were genuine, not everyone is a badass oper8r.If I could get a G19 sized gun in .380, I would. The argument is the same as why I carry a G19 over a G23. No one can shoot a G23 better than a G19 and like I said, shot placement is more important than anything else especially with pistol rounds. The above video change my entire view on the caliber war.I think in a decade or maybe less, more and more people will start to carry .380 in larger guns. We went from .45, to .40, then to 9mm and bullet technology keeps improving. People laughed and called 9mm an underpowered European caliber when police departments were moving away from .45 and looking for a replacement. Please watch the video before you reply if you disagree. It is very informative and I would venture to guess very very few people on Reddit know more about ballistics than the two guys interviewed. I am happy to explain the physics in more detail if asked, as well as the medical/trauma side of things.I will admit cost is a factor but .380 is around $0.17/rd and 9mm is around $0.14/rd when bought in bulk. That a difference of $30 for 1000 rounds which is more than most CCW holders shoot in a year. Even if you shoot that in a month you aren’t that much poorer with a G42. You don’t really get much of a discount buying more than a thousand rounds at once so I just buy 1000 for my G19 and will buy 1000 rounds at a time for the G42. “But I want all my guns to share bullets.” This has always been a strange argument to me. Some calibers work better in some guns and some guns only are available in certain calibers. Just buy the best caliber/gun combination and buy the ammo for each gun. Preppers are excluded from this logic but they are another topic entirely...TL;DR: You should shoot the softest caliber that can penetrate 12-18 inches and ideally it expands well (but expansion is less important). A G42 shoots softer with similar terminal ballistics in the important metrics as the G43 (and is slightly smaller, and has the same capacity) therefore it is the better choice for the vast majority of people. I look forward to the discussion! via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2YeDcUi

Non-Resident in Constitutional Carry State

Hey all,I will be spending 8 weeks in Phoenix, AZ for my clinical placement this coming spring. Arizona is a constitutional carry state, so residents do not require a CCW to conceal a firearm to my understanding. I am from Ohio and I know reciprocity between the 2 states is good but I do not have my CCW currently. I’m the last person you would EVER suspect of carrying, I’m really short, female & blonde, nonetheless I carry in most situations. I love local art, culture, food festivals. I have a quasi-official relationship with an NPO that knows I carry, but I have no official role. But... they know, and I know, I’m trained and insured but not licensed to act for THEIR organization. Should I request a formalization of my implied role? Yes, I’ve had training and do frequent range training sessions. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2SPSGbu

Question About Signage in Ohio

I live in Ohio and have had my CHL for almost 2 years now. One thing I have always been unclear on is the definition of signage. I don't ever leave my house without my carry and always stay mindful of the no gun graphic signs but I've heard mixed interpretations of what this law means.Does signage mean just the no gun with circle sign or does this mean explicitly the statement as shown below "Unless otherwise authorized by law, pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code, no person shall knowingly possess, have under the person's control, convey, or attempt to convey a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance onto these premises."According to Ohio's CCW laws, signage does carry the weight of law and some local stores have just a standalone no gun with the red circle sticker in the window, but I have never seen the actual written statement. Is the no gun sticker enough to enforce the weight of law?Sec. 2923.1212. Signage Prohibiting Concealed Handguns(A)Each person, board, or entity that owns or controls any place or premises identified in division (B) of section 2923.126 of the Revised Code as a place into which a valid license does not authorize the licensee to carry a concealed handgun, or a designee of such a person, board, or entity , shall post in the one or more conspicuous locations in the premises a sign that contains a statement in substantially the following form: "Unless otherwise authorized by law, pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code, no person shall knowingly possess, have under the person's control, convey, or attempt to convey a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance onto these premises." via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2K9UkR6

Not sure how to answer Guilford County medical questionnaire.

So I’m going in next week to submit my CCW packet and get fingerprinted. There is a question on the medical questionnaire that I don’t know how to answer. It states: Do you have any mental or psychical condition, OR do you take any medication that would make you unable to safely handle a firearm? (Has side effect, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, reduced mental acuity, or reduced motor skills) then it asks you to list the medications. I take meds for blood pressure and Xanax for occasional anxiety, I believe both of those medications have side effects listed. My problem is the way the question is worded, I feel that if you check yes then you are also stating that these medications prevent you from safely handling a firearm. So I’m not sure how to answer, I don’t experience any of the side effects listed but they are on the prescription bottles. And in this case, anyone who takes BP meds would be disqualified. Im sure they can get what meds I take from my Dr’s which I don’t have a problem with. I want to be honest but I don’t know how to answer this question. Any insight? via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2YnHU1l

StealthGear holster fit: Canik TP9DA vs TP9SF

A friend online recommended StealthGear holsters to me, and since I realized the company is local to me (Utah) I'm feeling extra-inclined to support them.Checking their website, I'm looking at the Mini Ventcore IWB (unless someone tells me it horribly sucks of course). They have it fitted for the Canik TP9SF. However, my gun is a Canik TP9DA. I checked with customer service, he said they don't have a TP9SF holster on hand to check against if I came to the store, so I'd kinda be ordering blind.Anyone know if these two guns are close enough that I could just by the TP9SF holster and have it work for my TP9DA? Looking at pictures I'm pretty sure they're basically the same frame but I've never used or ordered a Kydex holster before and I don't know if like, an 8th of an inch is gonna make a difference. via /r/CCW https://ift.tt/2GA8Fp2

Boxing or Judo for college student?

So firstly I have dabbled in kickboxing, only did 2 months because school and cost 120$ a month for two days a week. I can afford either boxing or judo before anyone says "well just run" yes I know de-escalation, or "9mm or 45 ACP" I know, I carry. I cannot carry everywhere nor do I want to rely on that as my only means of self defense. Alot of areas I cannot conceal carry anyways. I do go to the gym regularly (6 days a week). Which would be better all around self defense? Judo or Boxing.
