Developing awareness behind you.

How does one develop awareness behind you? Like to be aware enough to sense someone attacking or planning to attack you from behind? Especially during times when your attention is otherwise engaged such as while jogging and listening to music etc. Sure I can be constantly looking over my shoulder all day but you have to strike a balance between self defense and living your life. Someone once said that they constantly stand with one foot forward, even at the urinal. I think that's going a bit overboard, especially since attacks happen rarely. But they do happen and I would like to know a method to train myself to see this coming, react faster, and also to be more aggressive instead of surprised and end up thinking for a few seconds before reacting.

I am thinking about asking my coach to.occasionally randomly attack me out of the blue so I can react. Obviously I would pull my punches/kicks but would that also be bad training to do that?
